Hi, welcome to GOKUL (Global Optimization & Knowledge Unearthing Laboratory). Here, we primarily focus our work on Engineering Optimization, an interdisciplinary area that is applied to almost any engineering discipline for improvement in operational performance, design etc. Our works span over several topics of optimization and their applications on real world industrial problems, thanks to our long association with industry (15 years) and academic (10 years) research setups. These areas are broadly (i) optimization under uncertainty, (ii) surrogate modeling for computationally expensive problems, (iii) hyper-parameter optimization in machine learning, (iv) optimal control, (v) fundamental research in evolutionary and classical algorithms, etc.

Our research jaunt with optimization started around 1995 where the effort was to see the feasibilitity of applying evolutionary multi-objective optimization to a real world chemical engineering (Nylon 6 polymerization reactor) problem. One of our core research objectives over last several years was to collaborate with different researchers from different disciplines of engineering and proliferate state-of-the-art optimization / Machine Learning algorithms to various real life problems. These research works not only established the effectiveness of these techniques for solving complicated applications of industrial scale but also delivered some outstanding results to industries that show their true capability in extracting maximum economic benefit out of a situation. The applications of our research works are spread across areas like Climate Change/Big data (Spatio temporal modeling of environmental parameters e.g. PM10 affecting human life, Crop classification, Forest Fire; Carbon capture); Energy (Hydrogen production and its usage along with other green fuels in combustion, Wind Farm Layout Optimization; Battery Management System; Bio Supply Chain Management, Circular economy, e-waste management, Carbon credits calculation), Materials Science (Connecting process operational regimes to materials property through microstructures taking AI/ML route to enhance new material discovery), Health Care (Modeling interaction between COVID-19 viral infection and immune response in lung epithelial cells; Behavioral analysis of Ca2+ oscillations in nerve cells; Optimal control of bioreactors; Pattern identification in biological data), Chemical Engineering (Optimal control of Nylon 6, Epoxy, Polypropylene Terepthalate polymerization, crystallization reactors), Metallurgical Engineering (Operational improvements of continuous casting, iron ore sintering, carburization, induration, hot rolling etc. through multi-objective optimization), Mineral processing (Industrial grinding circuits, flotation, coal washery operation optimization), Thermal Engineering (Uncertainty quantification in CFD modeling of missiles) etc.
