About me

In my previous life, I was a diplomat. My diplomatic career included a long-term posting to Malaysia and a shorter one to Australia. I was then involved in APEC meetings and moved to the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation to closely oversee APEC and ASEAN related activities. APEC experience was valuable and enjoyable, but it didn't last long before I left the public service for an academic career.

In 2011, I joined the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow where I worked till 2016 as a researcher and assistant professor at the Faculty of Economics. The year 2012 saw the release of a number of inter-country input-output databases, such as the WIOD, Eora, Exiobase, that revived the interest towards input-output analysis. I was lucky to get acquainted with the masterminds behind those projects, so I received an excellent introduction into the amazing world of input-output economics. New measurements of trade in value added, supported by the newly available data, seized me entirely!

Since then, the areas of my academic interest have been at the intersection of input-output analysis and empirical trade research. My contributions so far include a method of calculating accumulated trade costs and border crossings in global value chains, an accounting framework for structure and length of value chains based on a total decomposition of output and a novel method of measurement of trade creation, trade diversion and import substitution.

Since 2015, I have been working at the Centre for Information and Analysis of Foreign Trade, a non-profit research and consulting institution in Moscow set up by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.

Oh, lastly, my education background... I was trained as an economist with a specialisation on Asian and African economies and received my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the Moscow State University. I completed my postgraduate studies in ASEAN economic integration at the same university in 2005.
