5th Grade
Welcome to Module 1: Cultures in Conflict where we explore the question: How do cultural beliefs and values guide people? For the next several lessons, students build critical background knowledge about American Expansion and its impact on Native American cultures in the west. Then, we will start our core novel, Thunder Rolling in the Mountains.

Also, if you haven't already heard, each student has been presented with the 40 book challenge! Their goal (and mine too!) is to read 40 books this school year. Please note, there is no specific grade/project tied to this challenge. The goal is just to read more books than last year! If possible, please visit the local library so your child can check out some books! If you're ever curious to see your child's progress, there is a tracker in the reading section of their binder.

Welcome to Module 1: Resilience in the Great Depression where we explore the question: How can enduring tremendous hardship contribute to personal transformation? Students begin their new novel, Bud, Not Buddy and we will spend our time analyzing events, character reactions, figurative language, and more!

Welcome to Module 1: Identity in the Middle Ages where we explore the question: How can society both support and limit the development of identity? Students spend the first several lessons exploring the concept of identity, specifically in relation to the context of the Middle Ages. We then begin our core novel Castle Diary, organizing and making sense of characters, setting, and plot.

To begin their study on the poetics and power of storytelling, students read The Crossover, which includes a diverse and dynamic sequence of poems that explore personal identity and the power of expression.
