Frequently Asked Questions
General
Q: What is Kiosk Player?
A: Kiosk Player is a fullscreen image display app for museums, exhibitions, lobbies, and digital signage. You build an image playlist in Edit Mode, choose how images are shown, then enter immersive Play Mode for visitors.
Q: What platforms does the app support?
A: The app runs on iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android. Portrait and landscape orientations are supported.
Q: Does the app collect my data?
A: No. Playlist images and settings are stored only on your device. Photos are copied into the app when you add them; they are not uploaded to any server.
Edit Mode
Q: What can I do in Edit Mode?
A: Edit Mode is where you manage your Playlist, adjust Settings (Exhibition or Signage mode, image scale, navigation arrows, and more), and tap Enter Play Mode to start fullscreen playback.
Q: How do I add images?
A: In the Playlist section, tap Add and select one or more photos from your device. Images are added in the order you select them.
Q: How do I remove an image?
A: Tap the X on a thumbnail in the playlist to remove it.
Q: Can I reorder images?
A: Not yet. Playlist order follows the order images were added. To change order, remove and re-add images as needed.
Q: Why can’t I enter Play Mode?
A: You need at least one image in the playlist. Add photos first, then tap Enter Play Mode.
Play Modes
Q: What’s the difference between Exhibition and Signage?
A:
- Exhibition — Swipe manually like a photo album. Best for interactive displays.
- Signage — Images auto-advance on a timer with optional transitions. Best for unattended displays.
Q: How does Exhibition mode work?
A: Visitors swipe left or right to move between images. There is a small gap between images. You can enable Loop so swiping past the last image returns to the first. Optional Navigation arrows can also be shown.
Q: How does Signage mode work?
A: Images advance automatically based on Image duration (seconds per image). You can choose a Transition of None, Fade, or Slide. The playlist loops automatically in Signage mode. Swipe navigation is disabled; use arrows (if enabled) or wait for auto-advance.
Q: What is Image duration?
A: In Signage mode, it sets how long each image stays on screen before advancing. Enter a whole number of seconds (minimum 1, maximum 3600). The default is 15 seconds. After entering a value, tap outside the field to save and dismiss the keyboard.
Q: What do the image scale options mean?
A:
- Scale to Fill — Crops the image to fill the screen.
- Scale to Fit — Shows the full image; may leave black bars.
- Stretch to Fill — Stretches the image to fill the screen (may distort).
Q: What do Navigation arrows do?
A: When enabled, previous/next buttons appear in Play Mode so you can change images without swiping. In Exhibition mode with Loop off, arrows are disabled at the first and last image. With only one image, arrows stay hidden.
Entering & Exiting Play Mode
Q: How do I enter Play Mode?
A: In Edit Mode, tap Enter Play Mode. The display becomes fullscreen and immersive.
Q: Why does a countdown appear when I open the app?
A: If a playlist was already saved, the app asks whether to enter Play Mode and counts down for 5 seconds. Tap Start now to begin immediately, or Cancel to stay in Edit Mode.
Q: How do I exit Play Mode?
A: Press and hold the top-left corner of the screen for 5 seconds. This returns you to Edit Mode. There is no visible exit button, so visitors are less likely to leave the display accidentally.
Q: Why isn’t the exit working?
A: Make sure you are holding continuously in the top-left corner for a full 5 seconds. A light touch or short press will not exit. Keep your finger steady until the hold completes.
Permissions & Storage
Q: Why does the app ask for photo access?
A: Kiosk Player needs access to your photos so you can build the exhibition playlist. Images are only used when you tap Add.
Q: Are my images saved if I close the app?
A: Yes. Selected images are copied into the app’s local storage, and your settings are saved on the device. Your playlist and settings remain after restarting the app.
Q: Does deleting a photo from my gallery remove it from Kiosk Player?
A: No. Once added, the app keeps its own copy. Remove images from the playlist inside the app if you no longer want them shown.
Troubleshooting
Q: An image doesn’t display correctly.
A: Try a different Image scale setting. Very large or unusual image formats may also cause issues—re-add the image or use a common format such as JPEG or PNG.
Q: Signage isn’t advancing.
A: Confirm you selected Signage mode and that Image duration is set to a valid value (1–3600 seconds). Make sure Play Mode is running and the playlist has more than one image if you expect visible changes.
Q: The keyboard stays open after I enter Image duration.
A: After typing the number, tap a blank area outside the input field to save and dismiss the keyboard. On Android, you can also use the keyboard’s Done action.
Q: Can visitors easily leave Play Mode?
A: No. Exit requires a continuous 5-second hold on the top-left corner, so casual taps won’t leave the display.
