At the start of the test
At the start of the test
The examiner will ask you one ‘tell me’ question at the start of the test before you start driving. He will also then ask you a ‘show me’ question while you are driving. The show me question will be asking you to carry out safely a task while you are driving. You can not fail the test for getting the tell me question wrong, but you could possibly fail the test if you don’t perform the show me question safely.
Before the test I will go through where all the controls and bonnet opening catches are located in the car.

1) Open the bonnet, explain how you would check the engine oil level, and where you would top with oil if it were too low.

A.To check the engine oil level I would remove the dipstick, and wipe the excess oil off with a cloth. Then I would re-insert the dipstick into the engine and remove it again. The oil should be between the high and low marks on the end of the dipstick. If the oil is low, then I would add some more oil through the Oil Filler cap.

A. Identify the coolant tank and check the min/max markings. If the coolant is below the min mark then more coolant will need to be added. To do this, unscrew the cap and pour in coolant until the max mark is reached.

A. Identify the brake fluid reservoir and check the fluid level against the min/max levels.

A. With the engine switched off and the steering lock unlocked, the steering will feel very stiff to turn. With the engine running the steering should become much lighter. So as long as the steering does become lighter I will know that the power assisted steering is working.

A. Reverse the car up to a surface that will reflect your brake lights, a garage door at night or a window. Activate the brake pedal and make sure you can see the reflections to see if the brake lights come on. Alternatively ask someone to help by checking the brake lights while you press the pedal.

A. Before you move off press the brake pedal. They should not feel loose or spongy, but should be firm. Also if you move the car slowly forward and touch the brakes, the car should not pull to one side or the other.

A. Turn on lights, walk around car and check that the lights are on.

A. Activate the indicators by using the hazard warning lights and walk around the car to see if all the indicators are working correctly.

A. Information will be found using the car manufacturer’s manual. Check the tyre pressures by using a reliable pressure gauge. Don’t forget the spare and remember to refit the valve caps.

A. A safe tyre will have no cuts or bulges in the wall of the tyre. The tread depth should be at least 1.6mm across the central 3/4s of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

A. The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint supports your head behind your eyes or ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Point out where any adjustment can be made (N.B. Some restraints might not be adjustable. )

A. A warning light should illuminate on the dash board if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system. It is an amber light with the letters ABS in a circle.

A. Operate switch, switching between dipped and main beam lights. Check and point out the blue main beam warning light. The main (or high) beam should only be used on dark unlit roads when there are no vehicles in front of you as you may dazzle them.

A. Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights first). Point out and check that the warning light is on. Explain use – that it should only be used in conditions where visibility is reduced to less that 100 meters.

The show me questions are asked whilst on the move, and must be performed without loosing control over the car. So it is important to choose the moment you carry out these instructions and not allow the car to vier off out of it's position on the road, or whilst someone is pulling out or crossing the road in front of you. Choose that moment carefully and make sure you maintain a safe driving position in relation to the kerb and other road users!
I will show you details of how to operate all these control in the hour before your test.
