Cycling Tips

Cycling is good for you! Its a great way to get outdoors in the fresh air and discover places maybe you have never been before.

Cycling is a great way to get fit and its good for your mental wellbeing. You may sometimes pass a cyclist with a look of pain on his or her face (especially if going up a long hill!),

but inside they will be smiling!

So, what should I bring on a ride?

Here are a few tips to make your cycling experience more enjoyable, and please don't be afraid to ask others for advice.

First of all check your bike before a ride. Regular maintenance will help prevent those mechanical breakdowns out on the road, but a quick check of the tyre pressures and brakes before you head out is a good habit to get in to.

  • Appropriate clothing. Layers are important especially outside of the Summer months, and a lightweight shower proof jacket is always a handy addition

  • Food. The amount required depends on how far/hard you ride but its always worth bringing something, even if there is a planned cafe stop (it may be closed). It doesn't need to be expensive, hi tech bars, take whatever suits you and fits into your jersey pocket

  • Drink. Taking regular drinks whilst on your bike is important, even if you don't feel thirsty. You should always take a drink of some sort regardless of how far you are intending to ride. There are various options including energy drinks, isotonic drinks, or just orange squash is fine

  • Tools and spares. Punctures and mechanical breakdowns do happen! If riding in a group there will usually be someone who will be able to help you out if needed. Even so, its good practice to always carry the following items with you, either stuffed into a jersey pocket or in a small saddle bag

        • Pump

        • Tyre levers

        • Spare inner tube(s)

        • Small multi-tool (one that includes a chain breaker is best)

        • Quick links - not essential, but for those rare times a chain may break; without them its a long push home!

  • Money. For those cafĂ© stops! Could be some cash, a bank card, or set your phone up for pay as you go

  • Mobile phone. Not just for texts and calls, maybe also for recording your ride and paying for your cake
