This section features songs that are canonically tied to the show
—while also being tied to Mel/Frank—
whether referenced by name or heard throughout its episodes.
Purple-The lyrics relate to Mel
Blue-The lyrics relate to Frank
Green-The lyrics relate to them as a pair
The first songs I’m going to discuss are the Styx tracks mentioned in episode 02x14
during a scene where Ellis is treating a patient with a facial laceration.
When Frank steps in to observe, the patient mentions it’s Styx night at a local bar.
Frank says he loves Styx, and when Ellis reveals she’s never heard of them
he and the patient immediately start listing off songs, trying to jog her memory.
—These are the songs they mention—
Mr. Roboto
Come Sail Away
Lady
Babe
I decided to take some time and go through the lyrics of these songs
and analyze them through a Kingdon lens!
First of all, let’s talk about the backing vocals.
Secret, secret, I've got a secret
Every day we get closer and closer to Frank Langdon canonically being The Most Divorced Man In America™
I'm not a robot without emotions, I'm not what you see
When we saw Frank last season, he was actively addicted to Benzodiazepines. He was detached, on edge, and frankly out of touch with the emotions of the people around him
I've come to help you with your problems, so we can be free
This season he is coming back from being gone for ten months. He’s gone through treatment, counseling, and countless NA meetings. He’s put in the work and he’s back with a fresh mindset and we can see that in the way he’s acting this shift and the way he’s trying to help the people around him.
I'm not a hero, I'm not a savior, forget what you know
I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control
He’s not the prodigal son or the golden boy anymore. Other people might think he is but he doesn’t feel that way. Right now he’s feeling like a guy who messed up and let himself lose control of his life.
I am the Modern Man
Who hides behind a mask
So no one else can see
My true identity
Last season he was trying his best to hide his addiction and his struggles. To hide behind a mask of cockiness and assholeness to hide the fact that inside he was fighting a war with himself.
The time has come at last
To throw away this mask
Now everyone can see
My true identity
Now he’s back and that mask is gone. He doesn’t have Benzos, he hasn’t been practicing medicine for ten months. He’s nervous and he’s shaken and he feels like everyone is counting on him to fail. And he knows everyone can see it. Because he isn’t doing anything to hide it anymore.
This song is all about moving on after experiencing trials and tribulations. It’s about moving on from the life you had before and sailing away to bigger and better things.
'Cause I've got to be free
Free to face the life that's ahead of me
Most Divorced Man In America™ what can I say *shrug*
On board, I'm the captain
So climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow
On every shore
And I'll try, oh, Lord, I'll try
To carry on
Frank is the captain of the ship that is his future. He’s carrying on with his life. Even if other things in his life have come to a halt, he has to keep sailing on.
I look to the sea
Reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends, and the dreams we had
Of course his life before his addiction and his recovery will always stay with him. Some memories are happy. Some, inevitably, are sad.
We lived happily forever
So the story goes
Abby stayed. That’s the story and they're sticking to it!
For now.
But somehow we missed out
On the pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can
To carry on
Once again… Most Divorced Man In America™ This one is literally spelled out for you.
A gathering of angels
Appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope
And this is what they said
They said, "Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
“Well of course you are.”
“We don’t always get everything right the first time.”
“I really don’t want you to leave either.”
Mel to Frank in the breakroom when he’s spiraling about whether he’s ready to be back. Whether he’s ready to move on, to sail away, from everything that’s happened.
This one is SO on the nose and just absolutely insane!
Lady, when you're with me, I'm smiling
Give me, whoa, whoa, whoa, your love
Your hands build me up when I'm sinking
Touch me and my troubles all fade
Mel has been there for him this season more than anyone else. More than people that Frank has known, personally, for years.
Lady, from the moment I saw you
Standing, whoa, whoa, all alone
You gave all the love that I needed
So shy, like a child who had grown
From the moment he saw her, his attention has been hers—whether he meant it to be or not.
You're my lady of the morning
Love shines in your eyes
Sparkling, clear and lovely
You're my lady
The fact that they’re on the day/morning shift together? She’s his lady of the morning! I’d definitely say that love shines in Mel’s eyes.
This song has tipped it over the edge from:
They just picked good styx songs.
To
Oh, maybe this was intentional.
But I'll be lonely without you
And I'll need your love to see me through
So please believe me
My heart is in your hand
And I'll be missing you
I think it’s pretty clear that Mel missed Frank while he was gone. She knew him for one, terrible, shift from hell. Yet she talks about him with her sister, her best friend. She says nice things about him. Implying that it is still actively happening after ten months. It hasn’t been explicitly stated that Frank thought about Mel while he was gone, but the fact that he remembered their “inside thing” and remembered Mel turning the lights off for Terrence in season one, I’d say heavily implies that she was on his mind in some capacity.
'Cause you know it's you, babe
Whenever I get weary
And I've had enough
Feel like giving up
You know it's you, babe
Giving me the courage
And the strength I need
Please believe that it's true
Babe, I love you
A theme surrounding Mel and Frank is their willingness to take care of each other and the eagerness behind it.They both know that this person will be there for them if they need encouragement.
Frank gives Mel courage and strength when he tells her that she’s good at helping people and she’s making a great first impression. And again when he tells her that the ED is a tough place for sensitive people, but they need them badly. And he needs her.
Mel knows that she can open up to him about the deposition and he’s actually going to listen and care about what she has to say. Nobody else has done that for her. People she’s worked beside for ten months continue to brush her off, just like the very first day, even after all this time.
But still, after all this time, Frank never does.
Mel gives Frank courage and strength when he tells her he doesn’t know if he’s really ready to be back, and she tells him that of course he is. And that no matter what he would’ve saved the asthma patient. The patient thanks Frank, and his first instinct is to look to Mel.
And one episode later he performs a badass “cowboy shit” procedure. After spending so much of this season doubting his abilities as a doctor. Mel gave him the strength and courage to step up, and do what they both knows he’s capable of.
Babe, I'm leaving
I'll say it once again
And somehow try to smile
I know the feeling
We're trying to forget
If only for a while
This one's a stretch but when I hear this verse specifically it makes me think of Frank telling Mel about the save he just had, and finally getting to say goodbye to her.
Mel thinks about the first day she met him and her eagerness to tell him about the baby she delivered, and when she found out he left she was disappointed that he didn’t say goodbye. Now they get it, and it’s happy, with smiles on their faces. Despite the memory of the feeling they’re trying to forget.
From here their relationship—whatever it may become—moves forward.
The time has come to discuss this glorious moment from from the season two finale.
In this scene Mel and Trinity are at karaoke
—absolutely jamming out to You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette—
after they both had not so great days working in the ED.
This season gives both Mel and Trinity storylines shaped by their relationships.
For Trinity, her dynamic with Garcia tends to drag her down.
For Mel, her connection with Frank feels like a rare point of warmth.
I think this song aligns more directly with Trinity’s situationship with Garcia
but it becomes very interesting when you look at the lyrics through Mel’s perspective
knowing she feels something for Frank, despite the fact that he's still married.
(for now)
It adds a layer that’s a lot harder to ignore once you take the time to read into it.
One last thing I want to add before I dive into the backstory of this song!
When I told my dad this scene was coming
—and what song they’d be singing—
he said, and I quote:
"Oh god, the wife is gonna show up."
And I think that perfectly sums up the vibe that this song brings to this moment.
You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette came out in 1995 and completely shifted how people saw her. It was messy, angry, and brutally honest in a way that felt almost shocking at the time. Instead of a polished breakup song, it dives straight into the bitterness and hurt that can come after a relationship ends.
Over the years, there’s been a lot of speculation that it was written about Dave Coulier, who Morissette dated in the early ’90s. She’s never fully confirmed that, though, and has mostly brushed it off, as it’s more about capturing that specific, intense feeling of being hurt and not over it.
I want you to know
That I'm happy for you
I wish nothing, but
The best for you both
Mel's wishes for Frank's marriage despite her feelings for him.
Or
Abby's wishes for Mel and Frank despite everything else that would come with... that situation.
An older version of me
For this one I'd like to specifically reference this post by user @1411411989 on Tumblr.
Despite what most people head-canon, what if Abby isn't the antithesis of Mel? Dark/red hair, diva personality, has had everything she's ever wanted handed to her. What happens if we finally meet Abby and it turns out she's just like her? The idea that Frank's "work wife" could be the carbon copy of his real wife, whom he has a rocky relationship to begin with. It's so insane when you think about the possibility that he's going to work everyday to make heart eyes at a woman who shares so many similarities to his wife at home.
But alas, we have no idea who Abby really is.
Is she perverted like me?
Would she go down on you in a theatre?
The implications of these lines alone. Need I say more?
Does she speak eloquently?
We can infer that Mel is a very well-read and literate person. We know that the same goes for Frank.
He makes multiple references to literature throughout the show and is shown to have a decent vocabulary.
Do we think the same goes for Abby?
And would she have your baby?
I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother
Absolutely INSANE line if you read it with Mel/Frank and Frank/Abby in mind.
Lines like this make my life so much easier. It's so on the nose I don't even really need to expand on it.
'Cause the love that you gave that we made
Wasn't able to make it enough for you to be open wide
Abby and Frank have been together for an indeterminate amount of time.
Long enough to have a child who is five years old.
Abby feeling like all of that time—and everything they've endured—still wasn't enough.
Or
Frank choosing his wife over the possibility of a relationship with Mel.
Mel feeling like the personal connection they've fostered still wasn't enough for him to choose her.
No, and every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told
Me you'd hold me until you died?
'Til you died, but you're still alive
I could absolutely see Abby saying something similar to Frank if any sort of infidelity takes place.
(which for the record I don't see happening)
And I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
Frank leaving PTMC for ten months. Leaving Mel behind. Mel losing the one person who made an effort with her and being left in the dark, wondering what happened.
Or
The absolute fucking mess that Frank's pursuit of Mel might cause in his home life, depending on how he pursues.
It's not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
Mel dealing with feelings he helped create but can’t fully return or acknowledge.
Or
The fallout of a failing marriage. One or both of them left holding hurt the other set in motion.
You, you, you oughta know
Frank seriously oughta know that this situation could hurt people that he really cares about, depending on how it plays out.
You seem very well
Things look peaceful
I'm not quite as well
I thought you should know
Again, this situation—unless there's an amicable divorce—is going to hurt people. And even if it is completely amicable, there could still be some negative feelings.
Did you forget about me
Mr. Duplicity? I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
THIS LINE! THIS LINE! THIS LINE!
“Mr. Duplicity” calls out the double life. Saying one thing, living another.
For Mel, it’s that awful feeling of being the version of his life he can just switch off, the one he forgets the second he’s back home. It doesn’t even sound like a real question—more like she already knows.
For Abby, the “middle of dinner” makes it hit harder. It’s so normal, which just emphasizes the fracture. Frank sitting there with her and the kids while something else lingers unspoken.
It captures that tension perfectly. Secrecy, guilt, and the sense that everything could collide at any moment.
Absolutely sickening.
But it was a slap in the face
How quickly I was replaced
Once again, an on the nose line that I don't feel the need to expand on!
And are you thinking of me when you fuck her
SO INSANE
'Cause the joke that you laid in the bed that was me
And I'm not gonna fade as soon as you close your eyes
And you know it
Mel and Frank finally taking that step—infidelity or not—and Mel possibly feeling that Frank thinks of it as a quick one time thing, but she won't leave his mind even if he tries.
And every time I scratch my nails
Down someone else's back, I hope you feel it
Now can you feel it?
The idea that Mel would want Frank to feel like she's under his skin is so buzzy.
