Artist Shen Fan takes the idea of a graphic visual language forlandscape to an extreme conclusion. Based in Shanghai, he uses a variety ofmedia to represent landscape, including light and audio, oil on paper andacrylic or oil on canvas. Landscape has been Shen's artistic concernsince the 1970s. Often using only one colour, in some of his paintingsproduced between 2000 and 2011 he appears to have created his own 'typeforms', based on simple lines and mark making. The resulting aestheticappears to borrow from the language of contemporary graphic design,map-making or data visualization, but actually could be interpreted as theconclusion of a process of reducing landscape to its essential forms begunalmost 2000 years ago. He imagines whole rivers or oceans by representing oneripple in an otherwise calm body of water composed of hand-painted lines.Shen claims to be actively removing individualism from his work, which makeshis output appropriate for consideration as a 'mapscape'. Like acartographer, Shen revisits the same forms over and over, trying to achievean impossible objectivity or neutrality. However, the design of the marks,the edges of the paper and the edges of the area depicted--in Shen'soutput, historic landscape painting and cartography past and present--are allloaded with personal and political significance.
