Mordred the warlock and his armies lay siege to Camelot. Uther Pendragon, the king of the Britons, infiltrates Mordred's lair during the attack and beheads him with the help of a unique sword forged by Merlin, saving Camelot. Uther's brother Vortigern--who covets the throne--orchestrates a coup and sacrifices his wife, Elsa, to Syrens to become a Demon Knight. He kills Uther's wife, Igraine and defeats Uther; Uther's son Arthur escapes by boat and ends up in Londinium. Taken in by prostitutes, he becomes a tough and savvy crime boss on the street. However, he is plagued by nightmares of the night that his parents died without seeing who attacked them.

Meanwhile, a mage identifying herself as an acolyte of Merlin presents herself to Uther's former general, Sir Bedivere. At Arthur's planned execution, the mage creates a diversion while Bedivere's men rescue Arthur. Taken to Bedivere's hideout, Arthur (initially) refuses to help them, not believing that he is king. The mage persuades Bedivere to take Arthur to a realm called the "Darklands", where he sees a vision of how the Demon Knight, revealed to be Vortigern, killed his mother. He also witnesses his father sacrifice himself to save Arthur and entomb the sword in stone made of his own body, making him realize that he is indeed the rightful king. Arthur learns Vortigern was responsible for persuading Mordred to attack Camelot, having grown jealous of Uther's popularity and wanting the throne for himself. He builds the tower to increase his own magical powers.

Parents need to know that King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is director Guy Ritchie's loud, stylized, violent take on the origin story of England's legendary king and the mythology surrounding his magical sword, Excalibur. Starring Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law, the movie includes most of Ritchie's signature touches -- quick cuts, rapid-fire dialog, humor in otherwise violent sequences, and creative strong language. Things frequently get pretty intense: There are several assassinations (some at close range, such as a throat-slashing) and battle sequences that destroy villages, castles, and people. There's a high body count; some of the deaths are bloodier and more disturbing than others. Language is occasionally salty, with one use of "f--king," and adults drink at pubs/meals. Arthur is brought up in a brothel; while nothing more graphic than kissing/lying on a bed with clothes on is shown, it's very clear what goes on there. Underlying the action are messages about teamwork and believing in yourself, and while the characters are flawed, the heroes are courageous and loyal. It all sounded so good on paper. Director Guy Ritchie, who reimagined Sherlock Holmes as a smart scrapper played by Robert Downey Jr., wanted to do a fresh take on the King Arthur legend. He cast Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam as the born king, raised in a brothel on the mean streets of medieval Londinium. Then Ritchie got Jude Law to play the self-hating evil mage king Vortigern. Plus there would be Iron Age street fights, giant monsters, and swords! How could it go wrong? Yeah, about that...

Before King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, the legendary figure's last big-screen outing was 2004's King Arthur, which starred Clive Owen in the title role. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, it broke the mold by portraying Arthur as a Roman commander called Artorius Castius, rather than as a medieval knight. King Arthur flopped at the box office and was poorly-received by critics, and today is barely remembered by most movie fans. Though Warner Bros. wasn't deterred from developing its own King Arthur movie for long, that failure did seem to make the studio a lot more cautious about picking the right version of King Arthur to make.

So, how did Warner Bros. go from balking at a $130 million King Arthur movie to making a $175 million King Arthur movie just a few years later? It seems that the shared universe aspect was the key. At a time when The Avengers had seemingly proven that cinematic universes were the magic bullet for success, screenwriter Joby Harold pitched an idea for an Arthurian shared universe. The first movie would establish King Arthur (effectively the Iron Man of the universe), and separate movies would establish other major characters like Lancelot. This is why so many mainstays of King Arthurian legend - like Guinevere and Merlin - are absent from King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. The plan was for them each to have their own movie before finally coming together, Avengers-style, in an epic team-up.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword currently holds a score of 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers criticizing its over-reliance on CGI, the tiresome nature of the quick-cut, non-linear editing, Charlie Hunnam's lacking qualities as a leading man, and the film's story for being simultaneously over-packed and shallow. Ritchie's filmmaking style was also called out for being woefully mismatched to a swords-and-sorcery tale, and underneath the flash there wasn't much substance. Between the talk of production troubles and poor test screenings and the lackluster reviews, there wasn't much hype for Legend of the Sword ahead of its release.

Another knight tried. Then another. But no one could move the sword. Some waited, thinking the longer they pulled the sword, the looser it would get. But when each man took their turn, the sword did not move for them.

Arthur grows into a skilled fighter and man of the streets, alongside his friends Tristan and Backlack. The three confront a group of Vikings who had mistreated one of the prostitutes, forcing them to pay her a year's wages for their behavior. Afterwards, the brothel is raided by the Blacklegs, Vortigen's minions, and Arthur learns that the Vikings were guests of the king and attacking them, therefore, constitutes a crime against him personally. Arthur tries to escape the city, but is caught and put on a ship with hundreds of other men. He learns that a mysterious sword has appeared near Vortigen's castle, and the Blacklegs have been forcing all men of Arthur's age to try and pull it from the surrounding stone. When Arthur tries, he pulls the sword out and quickly faints from the vast power it contains. Vortigen meets with him in the dungeon, revealing his true lineage. Meanwhile, a woman, identifying herself as an acolyte of Merlin, meets with Uther's former general, Sir Bedivere.

Afterwards, Arthur, angered by his failures, throws the sword into a lake and runs into the forest. When he stops at a small marsh, the Lady of the Lake pulls him into her realm and shows him a vision of the future, where England has been ruined by Vortigen's rule and the people are left to suffer in misery. Recognizing that only he can put an end to his uncle's reign, Arthur reunites with Bedivere, George, and Percival. When they return to the rebel hideout, however, they discover all of their allies dead, Vortigen having found them thanks to information provided by Rubio. They encounter the captain, who delivers a message from the king: If Arthur does not surrender himself by nightfall, both the mage and Blue will die. Bedivere is able to get the former released in exchange for Arthur surrendering both himself and the sword.

In the aftermath, Arthur, George, and Percival begin building the round table, where Arthur and his knights will meet. Arthur also dissolves Vortigen's pact with the Vikings, declaring that they must respect England's power if they wish to avoid war. Blue and the prostitutes arrive with the crown of Uther, which Arthur accepts. King Arthur then addresses his new subjects, holding the sword aloft in the air.

I believe that Tod from the video above actually made the hero props for the witcher series, I was actually looking for who made them, but it is impossible to find the swordmaker in the credits of the series itself.

When there isn't a pandemic going on I normally work within an armoury department for the UK film industry (though usually doing leatherwork). I did not have any involvement in this particular movie but personally know the team who did and have worked with them many times on other films. I certainly recognise the imdb names and am friends with many of them! In this case I believe the hero swords were made in house. Rather than individual craftspeople working from their own workshop, each department is brought in and setup under one roof within a film studio. It is generally speaking quite rare that any one person will make a complete piece from start to finish. Each person has their own skills and specialities, and jobs are allocated accordingly. So for example in a sword like the King Arthur excalibur prop, the blade would most likely be milled out of aluminium, the pattern welding effect would be CAD designed, printed onto a vinyl sticker, and used as an acid etching template, the hilt components would be sculpted or carved by a sculptor/modelmaker, moulded, and sent to a foundry, and the handle wrap would be done by a leatherworker. So while the initial design may have come from one hand, the final product could easily be the work of many people within the team. This is not always the case but in my experience it often is. One thing I can say with pretty much absolute certainty is that the sword in question was not forged.

Things are done a little differently in film, and I have so far never been on a job where any forging work occurred at all, and it would be very unusual if it did. In my experience sword blades are almost always aluminium, or occasionally steel for hero props, with cast urethane versions for the extras. Prop making is it's own skillset and the background of those within a film team is usually in model making, sculpting, mould making, painting, CAD, and other such skills, so geared quite specifically towards props rather than authentically made weapons. The makers (myself included) for the most part do not solidly do armoury work, but will work within different departments making completely different things from job to job depending on what work is available. I think I am fairly unusual in trying to get involved with armoury department stuff due to having an outside interest in historical weapons. e24fc04721
