We have some very thankful kindergartners this year! I am thankful for each of them as well.
During morning meeting, spent a little time talking about the word "thankful" and what it means. They cam up with many wonderful ways they feel thankful.
We then took some time to illustrate and write what we were thankful for.
During our Project Based Learning this week, the kindergartners finished creating their Eric Carle inspired insect and started the process of story writing.
The students mapped out their story by giving their insect a name, choosing the setting, creating a problem, along with a solution. We also talked about how we can describe what happened "first", "next" and "last".
They cannot wait to share their insect and story with you during their Presentations of Learning.
We explored some new reading tools during our literacy block this week. The kindergartners used star and light pointers to help guide their finger along the text as they read.
We also worked on some new CVC word pages in our independent workbooks during reading rotations. Each page helps guide the students to identify the beginning, middle, and ending sounds, blend/segment sounds in words, as well as write them properly using small/tall/fall letters on the handwriting lines.
During Number Corner we have continued to explore 2D and 3D shapes. This week we practiced patterning them in AB, ABC, and AAB pattern formations.
During our math lessons, we did a lot of with number line practice. We counted forward and backward, we filled in the missing numbers, and also did a little skip counting.
You can now work up to page 42 in your child's math home learning notebook

Friday was a great day to explore the woods! On our journey we talked a lot about our essential question, How do Things Change? We looked for changes in our environment.
We walked down hills (which they called "mountains"), we walked along the pigeon river, and built stick sculptures in the tall pines.
On our journey, we stopped to play with friends, we saw a frog near the river, and watched a Yellow Belly Sap Sucker pecking on the trees.
During our Project based learning time this week, we finished up our last artist study, and learned about Wassily Kandinsky. We explored his work and focused on the pieces where he created multiple circles within circles. Then, the students practiced that process and painted lady bugs which had Kandinsky inspired spots!
This week the students also begun to work on their Eric Carle inspired artistic insect. We started by cutting out the shapes for their insects head, thorax and abdomen. Throughout next week the students will be cutting out and adding the other insect attributes, such as wings, antennae, legs, ect.
I am so proud of the kids and how they continue to learn and grow through literacy each week. Every one of them has continued to move forward in skills and I cannot wait to share their learning with you at our Presentations of Learning.
The kindergartners have been working hard on their handwriting this month. In their writing notebooks, they have been practicing sounding out and writing simple CVC words. We then incorporate those words in to a sentence which also includes a few sight words. For example, I see the mop.
Each week we practice writing our sentences with a capitol letter to start the sentence, using "small, tall, and fall" letters as they write properly on the line, and then lastly, finishing the sentence with a period.
In math this week we continued to use 10 frames, and number racks to count and add totals. We learned a new skill and explored Tally Marks. To teach this new skill, I used popsicle sticks to show them how to line up 4 lines in a row, and then lay one across to "close the gate". We talked about when we see a group of five, we can recognize that and then just continue to count the rest of the sticks left over. This was a great way for them to explore counting by 5's.
Of course then we had some creativity time and they could build shapes and designs with their popsicle sticks.
The students have been enjoying their time in gym this school year so far. They have learned various new games and have been practicing many different gross-motor skills.
The kindergarten classes do not have an upcoming Exhibition of Learning (EOL) on Monday. Our first EOL will be on Wednesday, January 14th at 8:30 am.
I look forward to meeting with you and your child for their Presentations of Learning on either November 24th or 25th.

Our literacy learning has continued to grow! The kindergarteners are working at various levels and practicing new skills each week.
Keep up the great home learning. This week I sent home some new activities for your child to practice. Remember, they are always welcome to turn it back in to show me their hard work!
During Number Corner this week, I introduced a new calendar for the month of November. This month we will be learning about 2 dimensional (2D) and 3 dimensional (3D) shapes.
During our math lessons, we explored a new math tool, the bead number rack. The students counted totals and added two different totals by moving beads along our number rack.
You can work up to page 40 in your Home Learning book.
We have been enjoying our project based learning times in kindergarten! We were especially busy this week.
On Monday, we finished up our latest artistic study and made a click beetle using the art process, pointillism. We studied paintings made by Georges Seurat and then made our own by painting with a Q-tip to make tiny dots on our click beetle drawings.
We added a new insect to our studies, the lady bug!
This week, learned about the life cycle of a lady bug and its attributes. The students drew the 4 stages in their scientific notebooks as well as documented their first sketch of the lady bug. We will continue our lady bug work next week.
Lastly, we explored color mixing and created various shades of painted paper.
The students mixed the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) to make secondary colors (purple, green, and orange). They also added white and black paint to the colors to make lighter and darker shades.
We connected this color study to the artist Eric Carle. The students explored the illustrations he has created in his stories. He often used a variety of painted paper and added textures as well as many layers of prints. We plan to use the papers we painted, to cut and collage our own Eric Carle inspired insects at the end of our unit.
If you have not signed up for a Presentation of Learning time slot yet, please make sure to do so. I am looking forward to meeting with you and your child to share all the wonderful things they have done so far in kindergarten.

We had quite the spooky spirit week in Kindergarten! Make sure to check out all of the fun outfits and activities we did throughout the week!
This week during PBL, we continued to work on sequencing the story, The Very Clumsy Click Beetle. We also explored the life cycle of a click beetle, and its attributes.
The students have continued to connect letters to their sounds, blend/segment simple CVC words, match rhyming pairs, identify beginning/middle/ending sounds, as well as begin to identify some kindergarten sight words such as: I, a, like, am, the.
We also started a new hand writing process. Now that we have gotten through all the letters and how to properly write them, we are moving on to word and sentence structures.
Each day, we take a few CVC words, write them, and then also incorporate them in to sentences using a few sight words.
Number corner finished up this week and the students completed their leaf patterns and positions.
During math this week, we completed a pumpkin seed counting story. The students had to write numerals 1-10 and complete 10 frame patterns by filling out the correct amount of seeds in each frame.

We had special visitors come to kindergarten this past Monday. The Sheboygan Fire Department came to teach the students about fire safety.
We got to explore the trucks, learn special fire safety tips, explore their equiptment, and see how a fire fighter gets ready in their gear.
The Kindergarteners are moving along during our literacy block. Each day they practice various skills and I am watching them gain new skills each week.
Keep working at home and enjoy reading together!
This week in math we practiced identifying if a numeral is greater than, less than, or equal to.
During group time, the students tried to guess the number I was thinking of (1-10) on our number line. With each guess, I would tell them if it was greater than or less than. We kept playing until they figured out every number on our number line.
During Workplaces, we learned a new card game that practices the skills, "is it greater than, or less than".
You can now work up to page 34 in your child's home learning book. Just a reminder, if you complete any pages, you can rip them out and turn them in for a sticker!
We began exploring our new insect this week, the click beetle. We observed pictures of this insect looking at it in a scientific perspective. Next week, we will make sketches in our scientific notebooks and learn more about the life cycle.
We also read the story The Very Clumsy Click Beetle, by Eric Carle. We talked about how he created a click beetle in an artistic perspective. Next week, we will continue to explore more artist perspectives of this insect.
The kindergartners also practiced some story sequencing and they colored images from the story. They then put them in order from the beginning, middle, and the end.

We are close to finishing up our study of the butterfly. This week we continued to talk about the insect parts and did some labeling in our notebooks.
On Thursday and Friday, we did a zoom in thinking routine and the students focused on a certain aspect of the butterfly. For example, we used my desk camera to magnify parts of the butterfly's outside hind wing. The students observed the colors, shapes and lines. We decided that the spots on the wings looked like eyes, and perhaps that helped scare away predators.
We took time to study all of the insect parts and the students documented their findings in their scientific notebooks. Their drawings look incredible!
We look forward to making butterflies out of air dry clay, and then moving on to the click beetle next week!
The students have been working so hard during literacy. I am observing them gain new skills each week.
Some of the areas you can continue to practice at home are:
Connecting letters to their sounds
Writing uppercase and lowercase letters.
Sounding out and blending CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant) words.
Enjoy reading with your child every night.
Number Corner: We worked on our October calendar patterns.
During whole group lessons, we discussed "how many more". The students used a 10 Frame and unifix cubes to observe how many cubes they had and how many more they needed to make 10.
Workplace games: The students explored geo-boards, tangram shape pictures, number writing, and bean counting.

PBL:
During PBL time this week, we finished up our butterfly study. Our main focus was the lifecycle of a butterfly (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, adult butterfly), and the butterfly anatomy (head, abdomen, thorax, wings, legs, and antennae).
In the photos below, you will see the kindergartners sketching a butterfly and drawing the lifecycle.
PBL time not only brought a scientific perspective, but also an artistic perspective of the butterfly.
During group time we learned about the artist Claud Monet. We studied some paintings he had made and observed is art process. Then, we created our own monarch butterflies by painting with our fingerprint and using watercolor paint.
During literacy time we got through almost all of the alphabet letters, tried out some new learning tools and explored new games.
Whole group: We practiced rhyming, blending, segmenting, and identifying beginning/ending sounds in words.
Lexia: The kindergartners are working on levels that practice their current learning skills.
Independent work: The students are finishing up their alphabet pages in their notebooks.
Small groups:
Group one: This week, we practiced connecting letters to their sounds in letter race game.
Group 2: This week we practiced blending CVC words in an apple basket game.
Group 3: We read some decodable CVC books and learned sight words, the and like.
During Number Corner, we have started new patterns for our calendar numbers. This month, the students are patterning red, green, yellow, and brown leaves. Each day the leaf changes its direction (up, to the right, down, to the left), also leaves are added to each card every day. It is A LOT to keep track of all those pattern variations, but they are loving it!
In our math workbooks, we counted totals 1-10 and organized them in to 10 frames.

We released our painted lady butterflies!
The kindergartners were thrilled to hold and release our little creatures that we have been observing and taking care of for the past month.
We tried our very best to capture images before the butterflies took flight, but they were a little spicy and ready to dash away!
Please enjoy these beautiful photos taken by Dana Keswick. We are grateful!
We went on our first kindergarten hike on Wednesday! The students got to explore the Pigeon River trails, marsh, and woodland areas. It was a beautiful morning!
We did the final documentation of our butterflies in our scientific notebooks this week. The students drew an open wing sketch and closed wing sketch of the butterfly. They had to observe images of our painted lady butterflies and draw like scientist (we draw what we see).
Pictures from our butterfly release will be coming soon!
In Number Corner this week, we finished our shape exploration for the month of September, and have started a leaf pattern for October.
During Workplace time, we introduced two new games, Beat you to Five/Ten and Which Numeral Will Win. Both involve counting totals 1-10 and writing numerals 1-10.
Your child can work up to page 7 in your their Home Connection book.
Literacy time brought more letter/sound identification, sounding out/writing CVC words, rhyming pairs, and blending/segmenting the sounds in words. These kindergartners have been working very hard!
Make sure to try out some of the reading activities that were sent home in your child's take home folder and keep practicing these skills at home!

During literacy block this week, we started a new rotation. This is how we structure this learning time:
Whole group learning:
We do Heggerty (phonemic awareness learning)
We learn about our letter for the day. We practice the sound it makes, we identify objects or things that begin with that letter, and we also write it.
We sing the better alphabet song that connects the letters to their sounds.
Independent Learning:
Alphabet letter notebook
Lexia (ipad reading app)
Small Group Learning:
The kindergartners are split up in to small groups to work with me at my table. I focus on the skills they are individually working on and we play games, practice pre-reading activites, and do some reading.
We came back to school this week to find our caterpillars moved from their "j hang" position in to a chrysalis! The kindergartners were very excited. We documented this next stage in our scientific insect notebooks. Check out the video above to see one moving around.
The students have been working hard during our math lessons this week.
We have 5 games/activity rotations during our Workplace time. The latest favorite is the game, Spill Five Beans. The students count their red beans after they "spill" them and then they trace the total, which are numbers 1-5. The first number to fill up on their chart wins!
During Number Corner, the students have enjoyed counting the days we have been in school. Each day we add a dot to a ten frame and count our totals. So far it has been...18 days!
Outdoor play has been a great time for fresh air and playing with new friends! Check out some of the kindergarten smiles above!

Our essential question in this unit is "how do things change?" We plan to start the unit off by going on hikes, and documenting our observations of what we currently see in nature right now. We will also observe throughout the unit as the seasons change.
The students have started their study of insects by drawing a picture of an insect and sharing what they already know about it. We also shared the things we would like to learn more of as we continue our study of insects.
This week, our PBL time brought investigation, observation, and documentation of a mystery package that was delivered to our class. The children did a thinking routine on what they see, think, and wonder about our little creatures. We started making observations throughout the week, by drawing the changes we saw each day and documented them in our insect notebooks.
One of the favorite activities in math this week was exploring a 10 frame mat and using unifix cubes to count totals. We practiced this skill together, and then the students had some independent exploration time to get used to using this new tool.
During art class with Mrs. Held this week, the students used their fine motor skills and explored various art making tools. They cut with scissors, worked with glue, and explored a few drawing tools.
Hopes and Dreams:
Our finished hopes and dreams for the kindergarten year are proudly hanging in our classroom windows!
As a class, we talked about what some of our hopes and dreams could be, and I wrote them on their little rainbow raindrops. Some of my favorites were:
I hope to make the world a better place.
I want to make lots of new friends this year.
I hope to learn how to read books.
Choice Time:
Play times throughout our day continue to be a classroom favorite!
I have really enjoyed watching the students make friendships and start to show their silly imaginations as they play with one another.
Play time favorites so far:
Block area
Lego duplo table
Play kits
Next week we ill introduce the quiet play activites in our reading corner, and also explore our new art making area!

It was a very exciting and successful first week of school! I have enjoyed getting to know your children and look forward to our many adventures together this school year.
For the first few days, we spent a lot of time getting acclimated to our classroom and routine. The children learned a lot about the spaces we use in our school, met many teachers, and made many new friends. During group time, we started discussing our classroom expectations, and the children thoughtfully came up with ideas to make our classroom feel safe and comfortable.
Some of the class favorites this week were, mindfulness exercises, choice time, literacy, outdoor play, and specials. The children went to art, music, gym, rug routines, and movement classes!
We read the book Who You Were Meant To Be and talked about all of our hopes and dreams for kindergarten this year!
In the photos below, the students are using watercolor paints and exploring color. Next week we are going to add the next layer by using crayons and oil pastels. These will be the backgrounds of our hopes and dreams that will hang in our classroom.
During Literacy time this week, we learned how to sing the "Better Alphabet Song", which connects the letters and their sounds through a song. During group time we learned about the letter Aa. We identified the letter, connected it's sounds, and practiced tracing it in our workbooks. During Heggerty time, we listened for the beginning and ending sounds in words, and we blended and segmented compound words. Lastly, the students were able to test out our reading app on their ipads called Lexia. It was a busy reading time!
During math time, we focused on counting objects to 5, sorting and comparing groups of items, and patterning. During Number Corner, the children have been predicting the next shape on our calendar pattern and counting how many days we have been in school so far.
Check out some pictures below of the students exploring math through our workplaces time.
Choice time was a big hit this week. We got to explore fun toys and manipulatives at our tables this week. The students had fun getting to know their classmates and have some great social time!
Important Reminders:
In your child's backpack you should have found a folder labeled "take home folder". I will send this home at the end of every week with information for you to look through. Please return the folder back in theri backpack every Monday.
Snack: Please remember to send a snack in your child's backpack every day for the afternoon.
If you have not sent along extra clothes yet, please make sure to do so. Please provide a shirt, pants, socks, and underpants.
I forgot to mention that your child will need an art smock for art class. It works best if they use an adult sized t-shirt so it covers most of their clothes. Please just send one along in their backpacks some time the first week of school.
