May 6th- May 10th
D-E-F-G-H Week on the ABC Countdown lets have some with Disney day, exercise outfits, favorite things, wearing green, and hat day.
New "News"- for this week: iReady Testing scheduled for Tuesday, May 7th- Reading and Wednesday, May 8th- Math.
iReady Reminders/Tips:
Get a good nights rest the night before with some words of encouragement and a yummy breakfast in the morning to have them ready for a great testing session.
Your child will have as long as they need to take the test and will be provided a quiet space to complete it- we will be going over best practices when taking a test the morning of each session.
If your child is going to be absent either of those days please let me know so I can reschedule their testing session before the window closes.
Headphones- if you were sent a message on Friday to replace your child's headphones I would really appreciate them being there by Tuesday to help with their testing session.
This will be the last time your child's takes this benchmark assessment for the year and I will be sharing information with their teacher for next year to support her planning. Please remember that iReady is a screener- not a full testament of your child's learning.
After testing- the kiddos will have a longer brain break to bring them back to center before we dive into learning for the afternoon.

identify details that might help me understand the central message or lesson.
use the details in illustrations of a story to identify the main character's problem.
In Word Study we can:
R-controlled vowels. When a vowel is followed by an /r/ in a syllable, the vowel becomes “controlled” by the /r/ and makes a new sound. For example: in words like cart, fern, clerk, start.
In Math we can:
compare and order heights of plants grown in community gardens.
iterate a common unit to span the height of a plant.
explain why common units are used when measuring.
April 29th- May 3rd
I feel like I say this every month- May? Already? Thanks to everyone who came out on Friday to walk with us- so sorry the weather didn't hold up. This post will be short and sweet- we are on week 2 of our learning some of the same concepts as we continue our discussions and wrap up some work.
You will begin to notice that we are in the "wrap up stage" of our learning- can't believe it! With just 28 days to go of the school year- again- how?! Your child's learning will begin to be assessed, checked, and moving into more projects. The end of the school year is still one of lots of learning, but we will begin to prep for leaving Kindergarten and have a little fun : ) Here is some repeated information from last week.

The end of the school year is quickly approaching, along with the Lenart Picnic on May 24. Please consider joining the planning committee please, by using the link HERE.
You are invited to your first Lenart End of the Year Picnic and this is your day to spend with all the Lenart families and kids. It's in the Lenart Field and is the whole school day- so stay the whole day or come when you can. Parents- I will confirm when you can start setting up.
Your planning is necessary- I know a Kindergarten group chat has been made so spread the word/coordinate on what is needed for the day. Here are some suggestions from years of doing this : )
Tents/Canopy- there is zero shade in the Lenart field so many times families will bring theirs and line them up to provide shade.
Things to bring: Picnic blankets, chairs, coolers/ice, utensils, plates, paper towels, garbage bags, tables and table cloths for food, sunscreen- last year a parent brought those spray bottle fans and it was genius- it gets really hot- helped cool everyone down.
Food- your choice as a Lenart class- you can bring your own or you can all plan a group to coordinate catering and chip in. Some grade levels grill on sidewalk outside of fence or have been know to bring their big smokers and cook all day in the parking lot.
In the past- families have catered sandwiches, tacos, bbq stuff- let your tastebuds run wild on what you all decide on. Plan on coordinating snacks, fruit, salads/veggie trays, drinks/juice boxes.
Students will still receive a school lunch and snack bag- but its a day of fun so they will be snacking and playing all day.
Games! yard games, bubbles, or outdoor activities for the class to play with during the day.
MOST IMPORTANT: T- Shirt- the kiddos wear LIME GREEN- as our class color so we can see them all across the field.
Check out this link to order: Lime Green Shirt Options
Or: if you are creative or know someone I have parents really step it up and create a class shirt theme and make one for everyone- including parents to have as a memory then each parents pay that parent and shirts are given to class before picnic.

In Word Study we can:
oi as /oi/- here is a little explaination to support this sound at home- we use both “oi” and “oy” to make the /oi/ sound (think of the words “boy” and “foil”). When that sound comes in the middle of a word, we use “oi.” If it comes at the end of the word, we will use “oy.”
In Math we can:
compare two objects by direct measurement.
measure lengths indirectly.
use common unit to determine length.
In Writing we can:
Beginning our plan to showcase our family tale. Last week we brainstormed how we can present in various ways and how to find information- so now we get to start building out our showcase.
Homework:
Scholastic News and Weekly Journal, fact practice- subtraction and measurement Project- due Monday, 4/22 I have extended this weeks homework in order to complete the measurement project.
Measurement Project will involve you going outdoors and using nature to help learn how to measure. I will include a non-standard tool (cubes) in your child's folder, but you can also follow the guide and use pieces of nature (rock or small sticks) to be your non-standard unit. 4 of the 6 objects need to be measured- due to weather and location you may not get to measure all so pick and choose.

return extra clothes bag to keep in cubbies and pack a water bottle for daily hydration.
Since we are off a new start after break I am going to take this weekly update to jump into an explanation our upcoming units in both ELA and Math.
In ELA - Skyline Unit 5- Learning from Experiences- paper copy with more details coming home in child's folder this week.
English Language Arts curriculum, students use a case study approach to learn letter-writing and answer the essential question: How can the experiences of others help us to solve problems? Students will engage by reading and listening to books, reading “letters,” experiencing poetry, reading an autobiography, and watching short video diaries to synthesize experiences of others to glean lessons that could be applied to their own problem solving or conflict resolution.
In writing, students use the unit texts as mentors for learning and practicing the art of letter writing. Because letter-writing can vary in form and function, students will use the variety of mentor texts to practice and experience writing a letter that introduces themselves to others, a letter that shares a concern or grievance, and a note that makes a request. The writing practice culminates in a project-based, end-of-unit assessment wherein the student pens a letter giving advice or suggesting a solution that is drawn from their own learning (from the case studies).
In word study, students will be introduced to the concept of syllables and multisyllabic words to students. So far, students have only encountered one-syllable words, applying what they have learned about letter-sound relationships to accurately decode words. However, reading multisyllabic words presents an additional challenge. Students must learn to try to read parts or syllables of words, one at a time, to figure out how to say and read a new word. Word lists will come out weekly.
In Math Unit 4 Measurement and Data -paper copy with more details coming home in child's folder this week.
Unit 4: Measurement and Data, students use linear measurement with non-standard units as a context for further exploring comparison problem types. Measurement is used as a real-world context for introducing addition of three whole numbers. Students continue using concrete objects and drawings to solve various problem types about measurement. Students began work with measurement in kindergarten but will not have experience with measurement of specific objects, they have only compared items to determine if they were longer, shorter, taller, etc. Students will work with measuring non-standard objects such as paper clips, and inchworms. When working with three objects, students will sequence them from longest to shortest, or from shortest to longest. As students are measuring with non-standard items, they understand that the smaller the object they are using for the measure, the more iterations it takes than if they use a larger item as a measure. Students also begin to organize and represent categorical data and will use pictures, tally marks, tables, pictographs, etc.
Homework:
Scholastic News- this will become part of the weekly routine to promote students reading and understanding informational text and other formats of text, weekly journal, and beginning measurements page.
Save the date:

Directions:
Pick that special person (aunt, mom, neighbor, babysitter,- it can even be someone famous- the list is endless)
Bring in something that represents, reminds you of, or something your special person uses. You can bring in a picture, tool, or any object. I will not stop any child from being creative and if your child wishes to create a little board, diagram, collage-they are welcome!
Be ready to present and say a little blurb about your special person. Tell us what they do, why they are special to you, something fun about them- or a fun story you have about that person- or simply state they are just great! I will provide an index card with WHM Parent Letter coming home.
Example: My sister Michelle is a nurse and helps keep little babies feel better when they visit the hospital. I chose to bring in her stethoscope she uses to listen to the babies heart beat and how they breathe. She has been a nurse for over 20 years and now helps teach other nurses how to take care of children. My sister Michelle is special to me because she is kind, funny, and always lets me eat her string cheese when I visit.
Grownups: if it is okay I would love to keep what they bring in and put on display for the week and then return at the end of the week. Please indicate on project if I can : )

Helllooo March! We welcomed March with some hiccups and surprises-and a lot of illness- but as always we worked together to stay strong.
I hope everyone has taken this weekend to recoup, relax, and get healthy- I am hoping to see a full class on Monday with everyone feeling okay. I will continue to monitor any signs of a fever and feeling yucky. Please note I will always do water, snack, rest, bathroom, and waiting it out before I send home- if you get the call from Mr. Lin you know that is the final step in "how sick are you?" game- their day is not the best when they are not fully themselves.
We have a lot of March birthday celebrations- feel free to send in something small for the class (28 students)- each student will get their special time to celebrate at the end of the day on their birthday.
Classroom needs: ziploc bags (sandwich size)
Some of our learning is a continuation from last week due to Tuesday's safety concerns and many students being out our main lessons were put on pause : )

retell story details and demonstrate understanding of the central message or lesson. (RL.1.2)
identify who is telling the story from what I read in the text. (RL.1.6)
ask questions to clarify any confusion about topics or texts. (SL.1.1.C
In Word Study we can:
practice and work with all our spelling patterns ee, ea, oo, ou, and ow.
blend, read, spell words with different spelling patterns
In Math we can:
Add or subtract basic facts within 20.
Explain strategies for solving addition and subtraction situations.
Connect movements on a 100 chart to mathematical equations.
In Writing we can:
Begin to draft our very own poems about our families that include descriptive words
Learn how to accept and provide feedback on my and a friend's writing- we will practice the steps of peer editing.
Social Emotional Skill of the Week( I put on pause as so many students were out- and want all present for this skill)
We are working on our comments towards people- we are learning that it is not okay to say something to someone, but they cannot say it to us. We are also practicing the severity of our comments- with the focus being on are we teasing, bullying, meaning to cause harm- or are we just joking around.
Homework:
Weekly journal, vowel practice, and word problem practice page #2-same style as last week
Women's History Month Show & Tell. As we celebrate women from all over we can take a special moment this month to talk about a woman or women who inspire us, who make us feel great, who are special to us, and someone who we think is just awesome!

Hellooo to this month of fun! This month is full of love, learning, celebrating and pushing our learning. Starting off with some housekeeping- repeated from last week.
February 8th- 100th Day Celebration!-->this week!
We will celebrate our 100th day of school on Thursday, February 8th, 2024
I have planned a fun day where the children will experience 100 through many different activities. To help us visualize what 100 objects look like, I am asking that each child decorate a plain t-shirt with 100 items on it. Some ideas to use as decorations are stickers, googly eyes, fabric paint, cotton balls, buttons, pom-poms, safety pins, stamps, etc. The lighter weight the item, the easier it is to glue, stick, or attach 100 things to the shirt. Fabric paint is an excellent decoration because it is lightweight and doesn’t fall off. Have fun creating any shirt that you would like with 100 items on it.
Please have your child wear their shirt on Thursday, February 8th.
This year each class will have a fashion show at school to model our 100 collections. Attached to this note you will find a card. Please complete the sentences describing your child’s t-shirt and return the card to school on our 100th day. During the fashion show, I will read the card while your child models his/her creation! Happy creating! Please email with any questions.
Need ideas- google has some great ones! Google 100th day Shirts.

ELA: Our learning target is "I can identify words or phrases that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses"- as readers we enjoy stories through the words and understand that authors write stories for us to make us feel as we read.
MATH: Our learning target is "I can use a number line and number sequence to compare two-digit numbers.
WRITING: Our "My family" writing has kicked off and students are beginning their pre-writing and brainstorming around what details they want to share about their family. We will begin to talk about adjectives in our writing to be able to make our writing sound fancy when we talk about people, places, or things.
Homework:
Weekly journal, long vowel work, and math page comparing numbers.

Housekeeping for this week- we have a few pit stops before we jump back into learning.
iReady Testing window is now open- and your little one will be participating in the middle of year session. This is a chance for me to see their growth and adjust my planning for the remainder of the year. No need to prep for it- just make sure your child has a good nights rest and a yummy breakfast- and lots of positive affirmations before they come to school : ) If you know your child will not be in attendance that day- send me an email so I can reschedule their time.
Tuesday- January 23rd. iReady Day 1: Reading
Wednesday- January 24th. iReady Day 2: Math
On testing session days we will have a moment to decompress and relax our brains before we jump into our regular lessons in the afternoon.
Breakfast Time: I am noticing more students who want a school breakfast- but are not arriving to school on time so they are missing the breakfast time slot. Weather aside- kiddos should be in the building by 7:40/45- this will ensure your child has time to get their winter gear off, time to eat, and settle before we jet off to our special at 8 a.m. Lets get back into the routine of early wake ups or having breakfast at home or on the run in the car to ensure your child is starting their day off right.
Gym Uniform: Send to school in uniform- that will help with your child not having to change during breakfast time/miss instruction/or more importantly to them- miss recess since we go to gym immediately after recess/lunch. If you only purchased shorts- they can wear sweatpants over and take off if they get hot in gym class. GYM IS EVERY FRIDAY- so that needs to be one day your child need to come to school in some sort of athletic gear- no boots or jeans.
Low on snacks: since more students are choosing from the class snack bin we are already running low- if my awesome February parent who signed up wants to send in their donation early the kiddos would greatly appreciated it. Until then, please send a snack from home this week just in case they do not like what is left in the bin.
Classroom hiccups: Our behavior and choices have been a little out of the ordinary since we have returned from break. Gentle reminder- there will be no disruption of our learning time. This goes for all classes your child attends- as I have been getting reports from adults/staff at Lenart regarding choices they have made. If your child is making choices that impact the learning of others immediate consequences will be given. They are still developing- but they know by now how to act respectfully towards me and their peers. We have been spending too much time on redirections and behaviors. Some things we are working on- and I ask that you reinforce at home:
You will not always get your way- and it is okay. Being told no is okay.
Learning to let go- you will not always win an argument.
When I ask for something- it is expected to be done on the first time I ask- the reason is we may have to go somewhere in our schedule or for their safety, they are being disruptive or not kind to peers, we have to wrap up a lesson and move on, etc.
You can do things- without a reward. I was asked last week, "what are you going to give me if I do that?"- so let's work on knowing we do things out of the kindness of our heart and sometimes- "just because." I understand we are in our goal setting mindset right now- but not all goals receive a tangible object, but the feeling of happiness/joy that I did something kind, awesome, or something new/scary- or because it is expected.
There is a time for learning and time for playing- rug time, independent learning, learning stations are not playing times. I am noticing a rise in students not getting work done and being confused when they need to work- after I have gone over directions. The result is- they are missing their fun Friday time, because they have to complete their work. The class may have forgotten that I will 100% give them all the breaks and fun time- but our choices are not allowing us to get to that.
Self control- stop, think, and act- think about how your actions can change if you take a second and ask yourself "is this the right choice?"
It is okay to "be bored"- you do not always need to be stimulated. We are in a time that many kids need something at every moment to keep them distracted, but learning to be present, settled, and having to wait is a life skill we all need.
Big and small moments- learning to decipher if I need to "blow up" at something like "she is looking at me!" or can I calmly channel my energy into ignoring. We will work on what is "big moments" vs "small moments"- this will go with our idea of "letting go"
NEW ROUTINE: Since we are going through some things- behavior calendars will come home each day- check in to see how your child's day went and initial box to indicate you saw their daily behavior. Please discuss next steps or praise for the next day. A smiley face will indicate your child had an awesome day and followed all expectations- a number/code indicates what choices your child demonstrated that behavior on a consistent basis throughout the day- and needed redirections multiple times. I am all for chances- but there comes a time when you will need to turn your day around.
With that- here comes our learning : ) since our week was short we are still working on some of the same concepts...
ELA: Let's talk about who is telling the story- this week we will dive into our books to study point of view. We also dip our toes into poetry- we will begin studying how poems make us "have feelings" and are not just rhyming words.
Word Study: wrapping up magic e and moving into our new rules of "two vowels going walking the first one does the talking"- our new words will allow for students to process new words when they see two vowels side and side and know the rule to read the first vowel they see.
Math: identifying ten more and ten less than a number and using greater than and less than symbols when talking about numbers.
Writing: Our "My family" writing has kicked off and students are beginning their pre-writing and brainstorming around what details they want to share about their family. We will begin to talk about adjectives in our writing to be able to make our writing sound fancy when we talk about people, places, or things.
Homework- will come out on Tuesday.
I kept 1/15-1/19 homework in folders since a majority was not done and wanted to give you some extra time.
Weekly journal, greater than- and less than with place value.

Quarter 1 is a wrap this week- as we move into Quarter 2 the class and I will celebrate our work and set some new learning and personal goals. We will also take a day to catch up on some projects we have not finished : )
Learning Targets for this week:
ELA: Students can...
We are moving into our next unit where the class will work towards answering our essential question- “How and why do plants and animals protect themselves?”
I can ask and answer questions about key details in text.
I can use text features to locate information in text.
I can use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key details.
Math: Students can..
I can identify missing numerals up to 120 on a hundred chart (quick review- and skill that will be ongoing)
I can recognize repeating patterns.
I can identify a pattern core.
I can extend repeating patterns.
I can identify the rule for a counting pattern.
I can complete the given pattern with missing numbers.
Writing: Students can...
I can gather and recall information from experiences and sources. (beginning brainstorming for our informational text writing)
Life skill: Students can...
Identify and work through "What is an accident? vs. What is on purpose?"- The kiddos are going through understanding the difference between "They hit me vs- a friend just moved and tapped them." As a class we will go through scenarios regarding how to determine if something is real/on purpose or an accident by understanding someones tons of voice, facial expressions, and body language.
Kindergarten Routines:
We are transitioning to our writers workshop folders this week- students will learn to keep all their writing pieces inside their folder as they work through the writing process
Fun folders- will store all their "unfinished" work and projects- so students can independently manage their work that is due by the end of the week. If time is up or something pops up- students will know to store their work inside to catch up on. There will be a side for "fun" - like their drawings and a side to store work on.
Homework
Hundreds chart- missing number practice and ten frame addition review
NEW: Weekly Journal- students are to complete sentence prompt- using correct finger spacing between words, correct letter shapes, punctuation, draw, color, and label their picture. Students should try to "capture the sounds they hear" for spelling- I am not expecting perfect spelling at this point just being brave to spell on our own. Grownups- you can assist if your child is not writing by usually a yellow marker to write our their sentence which they need to trace over.

Week 7- October 2nd- 6th
80 degress in October? I don't know about you- but I am ready for some Fall temps and activities. Since Fall is a favorite we are going to be turning our classroom into a cozy autumnal space filled with leaves, pumpkins, and maybe some spooky things as we enter into this season.
Our class did such an amazing job at solving any conflicts this past week using our "bugs and wishes"- and I hope to see that strategy being used at school, home, and other life events where a conflict may present itself. We will continue on practicing the idea of "how we speak to others"- asking ourselves- "Is it kind? Is it honest? Is it needed"
Learning Targets for this week:
ELA: Students can...
describe characters in a text using a character map.
retell a story by describing its beginning, middle, and end ( continued practice from last week)
We will work on this skill the whole week as we work our way through the book- Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Pena and spend time in our new read aloud- Jayden's Impossible Garden by Melina Mangal

*note that your child may speed through the first levels as they are "easier"- and then will settle on the level that is "just right"
RAZ KIDS- continue to listen, read, and record books. Your child's levels are being updated. I am beginning to listen to recordings this week. *note: check that your microphone is turned on on device to submit recordsings- somethings that setting gets blocked and needs to be allowed.

Lenart Tree Day! An exciting new project coming up. 🌳
Who: Chicago Region Tree Initiative and all Lenart Students & Parents
What: Planting 15 native trees -- These 15-gallon trees are provided FREE to Lenart, and we will accept responsibility for watering and maintenance.
When: Friday, Oct. 20, 9 am to noon. It is also OAKtober—Oak Awareness Month -- in Illinois.
Where: On the front and north lawns of Lenart
Why: Chicago only has 23% of tree canopy. Chatham only has 14% of tree canopy. Lenart is located in a high priority area for CRTI and adding trees will enhance our campus and support our native pollinator gardens.
Oaks are a critical part of the Chicago region’s ecology. However, the region is down to 17% of the oak ecosystems that were here prior to European settlement in the early 1800s. The remaining oak ecosystems are often fragmented, which makes them more likely to be invaded by non-native species. We will be adding two oak trees here at Lenart. But, we also need tree diversity, and we will be planting catalpas, American hornbeam, persimmons, and more
How parents can help: Sign up to help dig the holes. Each classroom will have an opportunity to go outside to help finish digging the hole, planting the tree, adding dirt, watering the tree, and then adding mulch. Parents can also help supervise the class while they are outside.
EMAIL MS. FLAHERTY & MRS. SMOLEN if you can help- smflaherty@cps.edu and klsmolen@cps.edu

Week 6- September 25th-29th
Last week of September!? How did that happen?! At home connection- Kindness menu- complete tasks as family, model kindness in your daily acts and tone of voice.
Kindness read alouds- Ms. Flaherty favorites: "What does it mean to be Kind? by DiOrio and Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller.
Listen to "Kindess is a muscle song"
I found this blog that may help promote how we teach our littles to talk nicely- I like the approach of asking- "is it honest, is it kind, it is necessary." Getting kids to talk nicely So instead of saying, "Ew, you have grapes again"- you can say, "Do you like green or purple grapes"-or "what do you like about grapes?"
Kindergarten Routines:

Student Application Book- for our word study a there are pages to show their learning- this week will explore how to navigate their books.
Stop, think, and Act is our social emotional theme of the week- in connection with our goal for self control and self regulation. How do we not blurt something out? Want to poke someone? Jump off the stairs? Say that not so kind word? Not let picking the wrong cereal throw off our day?
Identifying the consequence of our choices- we are well into knowing between smart and kind choices and maybe the not so kind and smart choices. If your child is exhibiting behaviors and choices that do not align with our class mission and expectations I will be implementing some expectation plans and weekly individual goals to ensure they are moving about the room with respect and mindfulness. I will be reaching out to you for support.
At home connection- found this article/link from Mom Junction- that explains stages of self control/regulation, what it looks like- and how you can work on it at home : )

Week 3- September 4th- 8th
Helloooo week 3 and a whole new month!
This short, but sweet week will focus on "who am I as a learner and who am I as a human in this classroom?"- we began this discussion a little last week when we explored all the fun stuff about us. As we begin moving towards content in this third week the kiddos will get a chance to see what works best for them when they learn- for example: Are they a chair learner?, Do they like to stand up as a work?, Are they someone who needs to watch my every move to understanding? or do they like to learn by themselves and come to me for assistance? This will be an ongoing learning process- identifying their personal needs will change throughout the year, but lets start talking about it : ) We will focus on the power of "yet" too- we can do a lot of amazing things, but in life there are some things we "can't do"- we will talk about growing in our classroom and what we need to do as a learner, listener, and human to grow and change- so that the things we can't do "yet"- become things we are confident in doing. We will explore this idea during our morning meeting and do a check in during our end of the day meeting.
*I will also be reinforcing previous weeks routines and expectations.
Curriculum Night! Wednesday, September 6th 5:30-7:00- join us for a night at Lenart to meet Lenart teachers and hang out in 216. I will be reviewing our years curriculum and student learning objectives for the year.
Assessments are beginning: I will be wrapping up my beginning of the year summer assessments and we will start our schoolwide assessments. This week we will practice how to open our chromebooks, how to use a mouse, and how to type on a keyboard, plus getting into the mindset of how to take our first "brain check."
* I will be discussing our testing with you all on curriculum night.
iReady- ELA= Tuesday, 9/12
iReady- Math= Thursday, 9/14
Learning Targets this week:
ELA: Students can...
count different sounds they hear
use classroom routines to listen to others and share ideas
actively engage in group reading activities
write and draw to tell about an event
Our understanding of the week is that students learn what a community is and how every student is part of a community"
Book of the week: Mariama- Different, but Just the Same- by Jeronimo Cornelles and
Math: Students can...
describe similarities and differences among items in a set.
sort items by a common attribute.
compare sorting strategies.
describe how things are the same and different.
Our understanding of the week is that attributes can be used to sort collections into sets and that sets can be counted, compared, and ordered.
Writing: Students can...
share my idea through speaking and writing.
This week we are working on our "writing time" routines- where to find the paper, where to put our done work, where to keep work I am still working on. Since we want to communicate and share our ideas we will begin a class list of drawings and words that show what we are interested in and what we can write about Example: soccer, cooking, reading.
Our understanding of the week is that we are a community of writers who write everyday.
Kindergarten Routines:
We are learning lots of how to "function" in our room- and they are getting the hang of it!
Learning Stations- how to move independently about a station- and manage our time. We will work towards understanding time and schedule and how to "use our time" wisely to promote
"How is my learning going"- this week we will talk about what we can do to show our best learning and communicate with Ms. Flaherty how we know something. I will introduce our "star" system in the classroom as a beginning rubric to show the students where they need to go in their learning.
The class and I will talk some goal setting and what best work looks like- and even when we are not there...yet- we know what to do keep working (this will be an ongoing practice for the remainder of the quarter)
Chair bags- students will receive their chair bags this week. A chair bag stays on the back of their chairs to store their learning materials. We will learn what can/cannot go in their chair bags- along with how to stay organized. *we did not get to this routine last week
Friendly Reminders:
Red folder should be sent back each day.
Breakfast is provided by school if your child would like to eat at school- remind your little they are welcome to a breakfast. Breakfast is 7:45-7:55- so its quick. Please have/leave at home breakfast at home if your child is not going to grab one-it was causing some confusion and feelings when they were bringing at home breakfast and grabbing a school breakfast- too much food and too little time. Thanks for your support and understanding on this.
School start time: 7:45- lets start our day off right by arriving to school on time. Those 10-15 minutes in the morning if your littles times to prep for their day and we are off to Spanish by 8:00.
Snack: something small to give them a morning boost.
Sweater: you are welcome to leave "at school sweater" in cubbie for those "hopefully" chilly days coming up.

Week 2- August 28th- September 1st
Week one is done and week two is going to be "all about you" in Kindergarten this week.
This week Kindergarten will work on "communicating well"- and we "communicate well" to tell people about ourselves, say what is on our mind, solve problems, and be able to have a conversation with others to learn about them. We will focus on ways to communicate, how to start a conversation with someone, how to communicate in a positive way when in a situation, and learn that people have their own special way of communicating that may be different than your way. To support this learning the class will learn to participate in their "peanut butter and jelly partners"- where they practice turning and talking to each other to respond to a prompt/question or moving about the room in a "mix and mingle" to promote talking and share out with other friends.
While learning to communicate we will be working on our power to share about who we are. This week is also- "All About You week". The class will be working towards understanding who they are as a person, kindergartener, and friend, - we will even start thinking about who we want to be in 216 as we learn and grown. To support our learning the kids will create a self portrait understand their special and unique physical characteristics - and begin a foundation of appreciating who we are and who others are : ) We will also build out "identity webs"- we will have talks around who we are, likes, dislikes, favorite things, and things that make us so very special. We will use our self portraits and identity webs to showcase to everyone all the unique friends in 216.
At home connection: Create your own identity web- share with your child who you are- spark discussion on what makes you- "you" or draw your own self portrait and have a discussion about what makes you special. Example of an identity map/web below. Example: Ms. Flaherty is a teacher, Irish, reader, kind, worrier, "freckly", woman, nap- lover, traveler, blue eyes.
At home reads that are a few of Ms. Flaherty's favorites lately: The Day you Begin by Jacqueline Woodson, Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry, Lovely by Jess Hong, Eyes that Kiss in the Corners by Joanna Ho
Kindergarten routines:
We will moving into some academic content/routines this week. I am checking for first and last name letter formation/spelling, number and lowercase letter writing.
Red Homework folders- the class will learn how to pack up their folders and understand that the red folder is an important way to communicate to our own grownups what we have to work on and pass along messages.
"I am independent" - at home promote your child getting their own folder out and being able to put it back in backpack each night.
Chair bags- students will receive their chair bags this week. A chair bag stays on the back of their chairs to store their learning materials. We will learn what can/cannot go in their chair bags- along with how to stay organized.
Scissors- we will add scissors to our toolkits and discussion scissor expectations. I will be observing how students cut this week. If I have students who need some extra practice please see cutting pages and helpful tips to support this skill in red foldler by the end of the week and this practice will be yours to keep and does not need to be turned back in to me. *I do have left handed scissors in the classroom for support.
How to use math tools: I am introducing math tools- dice, counters, and cubes for the students to practice with in a station- we will be going over how to use these tools and why they are a "tool" in order to help us learn and not a toy.
Friendly Reminders:

Week 1- August 21st- August 25th
Welcome to Kindergarten! This week we will focus on what is Kindergarten life all about? : ) As we begin to learn "school" we focus on learning about our environment- what is in it? how do we move around it?, but most importantly who is in our environment- our new kindergarten friends! Through activities like a friend scavenger hunt, animal names, and a silly game of would you rather the kiddos begin to learn about who they will spend their day with. As their curious eyes wander around the room the students and I will play a game of "I spy"- where they will help me label parts of the room with their drawings and writing. We will take a class tour of Lenart learning where all the classrooms and bathrooms are- and maybe even pop in to see Ms. Sims and Mrs. Henderson in the main office. We will also focus on skills and routines like how do we safely move around the room- working at tables, walking to the rug, going up the stairs. All very important things that will ensure a safe classroom.
Spanish with Ms. Torres! The kiddos will spend their first quarter at Lenart hanging and learning from Ms. Torres. 216 will also get a chance to be in the STEM lab with Ms. Chorba on Wednesday afternoons.
