Research has shown that students who have educational opportunities at home increase their kindergarten learning and readiness as well as academic success throughout their life. Below are at home activities that are cheap or free to do with your student. Attached to the photo is a link that has many more ideas for at home learning. Card games are a great way for your student to practice their number identification, adding, and subtracting. Click on the picture for a link that has lots of different games that you can play with a normal deck of cards.
Emergent readers are books that your student can read with little to no help. They have sight words and words that your student can sound out. Click the picture for a link to different emergent readers that can be printed or read online.
Sink the Letter: Write a letter, number, word, shape, etc. on an index card or piece of paper and put it inside a Ziploc bag. During bath time, say something you wrote on the card and have your student sink the bag with that card in it.
Write the Wall: Say a letter, number, word, shape, etc. and have your student write it on the bathtub or shower wall with bathtub crayons. Attached to the picture is a link to bath tub crayons from Amazon.
Have your student identify different letters, numbers, and shapes or build words and names on the fridge with magnets. You could also use this before snack or meal times so that before they eat, they have to identify one or two of the magnets. Attached to the picture is a link to fridge magnets on Amazon. Some cookie sheets are also magnetic if you prefer your student to use that.
Use a whiteboard marker to write letters, words, or numbers on the windows or glass doors. Say something you wrote and have your student erase it. Linked to the picture are expo markers from Amazon.
Your student can write his or her name, letters, words, shapes, or numbers on the sidewalk with chalk. Attached to the picture is a link to chalk from Amazon.
Write letters, numbers, words, or shapes on a piece of paper with wax. Have your student watercolor paint all over the paper. As what you wrote appears, have your student identify it. A link to wax sticks are linked to the photo. Watercolor paints can be found at nearly any store like Walmart, Target, or the Dollar Store.
Playdoh is such an engaging way to learn! Write their name, letters, numbers, etc. on a piece of paper and have your scholar make what you wrote. Encourage them to make a snake by rolling their hands together with the playdoh before they form what is written.
