Kim DongHan
Biography
Donghan Kim (b. 1997, Seoul) is a media artist who focuses on electronic, physical, and conceptual transformation processes. Beyond sound, Kim deconstructs and rearranges the sensory architecture of reality using light, space, code, and physical objects. Operating as both an "editor" and a "converter," he engineers conduits that traverse sensory thresholds. His practice spans audiovisual performances, interactive objects, sound installations, and real-time simulations. By treating discrepancies, glitches, and imbalances between technological media and human perception as aesthetic resources, Kim manipulates audience perception to defamiliarize conventional experiences of time and identity.
Artist Statement
My work focuses on sensory and conceptual "conversion" extending beyond sound. Rather than existing as static forms, my pieces inhabit states that continuously transform, transfer, and reconstruct across time and environments.
Human sensations, emotions, and relationalities are never fixed. I deconstruct these sensory constructs and re-edit them into non-linear frameworks to explore the possibilities of intersensory translation. This process constitutes a recursive updating of meaning, fueled by the dynamic interplay among sound, visuals, physical space, and digital computation.
Perceptions and emotions can never be entirely shared. This inherent impossibility does not signify expressive failure; rather, it opens a threshold to invent new medial languages. I intend for my work to operate as a conversion apparatus for these gaps, mismatches, and misalignments—whether they are accepted, rejected, interpreted, or misread.
