Importance of Growth Mindset
In an academic setting, growth mindset is important because it demonstrates to students that “intelligence” is not static, but rather dynamic. Mistakes don’t hurt or hinder, but rather direct towards achievement. Having a growth mindset can also encourage trying new things and taking risks. Finally, adopting a growth mindset can “make you more yourself” and help realize one’s full potential.

When I fail, I have to spend a lot of time reflecting and reminding myself that this failure will help me improve in a professional or personal manner. As I reflect, I determine what my next step should be, and then I take that next step.

Ways to Model Growth Mindset Daily
Ways to Model Growth Mindset Daily
- Set, modify and meet short- and long-term professional goals based on self-assessment, reflection and supervisor feedback
- Find and attend PD that requires stepping out of comfort zone
- Request supervisor to watch for a specific skill that is a known weakness
- Ask for feedback on performance that needs adjusting
- Honestly reflect on instruction and looks for areas of success and needed growth
- Share failure, reflection, and further attempts openly

Influence and Impact
In this course and my Educational Technology Leadership program, a growth mindset will assist me in a couple of ways. First, growth mindset will help me review and reflect on my work, continuously improving it until due (and sometimes even after that) and encourage me to try things that I haven't before, like podcasting or a new web application. Next, using my growth mindset, I will seek out all available learning opportunities to make myself a better graduate student and Instructional Technology Specialist. Finally, having a growth mindset will remind me to value my work and enjoy the process of learning, regardless of outcome.
