18 July 2023 - we did research on the effectiveness of creating music videos to understand why a MV is made in a certain way which will help us in making our own music video for our coursework. First we chose a type of music genre and our group decided on Pop Music.
For a music video in the ‘Pop’ genre, the theme of the song usually surrounds a safe topic like love or relationships, in which nowadays extravagant visual effects and a small storyline is created to attract the attention of audience. This is done because Pop artists are targeting general/mainstream audiences. Making the main idea of the song more relatable helps the artist build their audience and gain more fans of their songs which leads to more consumption and hence more revenue for the record label, enabling the artist to have sufficient budget for producing more music videos and other media texts in the future.
This marketing technique of using synergy through publishing the same music in different mediums allows for constant repetition of using the same colors, fonts, shapes or symbolism which helps reinforce the artist’s brand and makes it more memorable. Just by listening to a catchy melody or seeing a specific object or color continuously allows the audience to associate specific things with the artist which again helps the artist in selling their music through the purchase of their albums or merchandise, causing their revenue to increase.
Taylor Swift - I Bet You Think About Me
use of the color red
Coldplay x BTS - My Universe
colorful and artists as holograms and physical form in different worlds
Jisoo - Flower
use of flowers and same type of font used for the texts
20 July 2023 - Today we researched about the 4 elements that make up a music video.
lip sync which is done for the main parts or chorus of the song by the artist as it builds their brand for audiences to correlate the music with the artist
title card (record label, producer, production house)
storyline (cross cutting between artist lip sync and the story)
end credits (sometimes especially if it includes many actors/doesn’t only show the artist)
For Pop Music Videos, they all generally follow the same style.
Other than the 4 elements, they also have typical conventions such as the more skimpy costume designs. Based on Laura Mulvey’s theory which talks about the male gaze, music videos with women in these revealing outfits catch the audience’s interest more since in real life, it is common for men to objectify women. While this attention may be for the wrong or inappropriate reasons at first, audiences will keep rewatching the video and soon may find the song very catchy and enjoy it hence leading to more consumption and more popularity and revenue for the artist. This is proving to be successful with the rising Popstar artist Ice Spice in her recent music video called Munch where she is dressed in revealing clothes whilst doing some rap as in America, rap is especially well known.
Another convention is cross cutting which as I mentioned earlier shows usually three or more different scenes exchanging between the storyline and the artist lip syncing to some parts of the song. Nowadays it is more common for artists to make their music videos (MVs) like a short movie with a title card and advanced visual effects and sometimes they add a small introduction to what their music video’s theme is about. We can see this in Coldplay x BTS’s music video, My Universe, which talks about bands who rebel against the rule of the universe where music is banned.
Lastly, most Pop Music Videos now add more actors/other famous people in their music videos instead of the MV just being the artist lip syncing to the music as it can appeal to more potential audiences especially those who are unfamiliar with the artist. An example of this is Bella Poarch’s Build a B*tch Music Video which stars many twitch streamers, actors and other artists such as Mia Khalifa and Sub Urban.
22 July 2023 - Today's class was used to practice making a music video by picking 20 seconds of any song to film and edit to using the typical conventions of a music video. This included the use of multiple different shots in different angles and different camera movements with the actor lip-syncing to the song.
For this task I was paired with Kenza and since I had plans on becoming the editor, I decided for her to be the actor and myself as the editor. We picked the song "All too well" by Taylor Swift as Kenza was most familiar with this song and filmed this in class since the lighting in the room was pretty good. As for the first practice, I think we both did fairly well since Kenza perfectly lip sync to the lyrics and I lined up the song to her mouthing the lyrics well. This gave us both hope in doing well for our final music video.
26 July 2023 - Today we analyzed two well known Pop Artists’ branding across different mediums. Having good and consistent branding is important especially in the music industry since there are many artists in each genre so by having a good brand, artists are able to differentiate themselves from everyone else.
Taylor Swift just released a new album called Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) which talks about how far she has come over the years since she started her career. In the album cover, Taylor wore a flowy, dark purple dress which is similar to the dress she wore when she first released the Speak Now album in 2010 hence why the promotion of this album revolves around the color purple. Her music video uses triadic colors (blue violet/deep purple, orange and green) to accentuate the color purple as well as using a purple glowy text in the end credits. Taylor’s social media page is also full of purple posts and story highlights including concert pictures, dates for her upcoming eras tour, as well as posting about the newest album by pinning the album cover and showing the song list. She also linked her album to several streaming platforms to make it more convenient for new listeners to immediately hear her songs. To add on, her digipak also follows the theme with the CD being the same purple color as her dress. Taylor also has her own website for merchandise which also uses a purple colored theme for texts and background which again emphasizes the importance of this color. Doing this type of branding ensures that audiences are reminded of Taylor Swift when they see the color purple which helps her get more fans/audiences to listen to her music.
Melanie Martinez’s style of branding is solely focused on her latest songs which is why her social media page is filled with just posts related to the main character (Crybaby) in her music video. Her latest album “Portals” talks about the evolution of Melanie with each song talking about her different stages of self-growth using Crybaby to represent herself. With her being an artistic person, she exudes a very enchanted, fairy-like and whimsical feel so her music videos, social media pages and digipak have visuals of the Crybaby character in a forest. Her Instagram account also has a link in her bio to the title song of the album, Void, a story highlight which answers potential questions related to her Portals album, and a link to her shop. Melanie also has her own website which still follows Crybaby’s whimsical adventure with the background being plants and flowers and the buttons or texts with things we may encounter in a forest/secret garden such as mushrooms, rocks, spiderwebs. Her website directs her fans to everything including her merchandise (e.g digipak and clothing), tour dates, music services her album can be found at and a description of Melanie and her songs.
1 August 2023 - A music video script is essential to make as it gives a detailed explanation to our actors as to what to do, say or act in specific parts of the song. It also allows our cameraman to know the type of camera shot, angle, or movements that has to be done to tie in the actions of our actors with the song.
To make a script, we first must listen to the song repeatedly to help us visualize the scenes in each lyric including the type of emotions it’s trying to convey, the main idea of the song and the tempo/beat of the music (upbeat = more active/expressive actions). After that, we can break down the song into different scenes to show the sets they are located in. Then based on the set, we start to think about what the actors should do or how they can interact with the area and the props in it. Here we must ensure to write as specific as possible so it is clear to both the actor and cameraman.
Drawing a storyboard gives both the actors and directors a better understanding to visualize how we want the end product to look like from the angles and shots to film the scenes in hence perfecting each part.
15 August 2023 - Creating a digipak is one of the media products we had to give for our coursework so to ensure we make an accurate digipak, we researched the typical conventions of a digipak.
A digipak is said to have 6 parts: front cover, back cover, front inner cover, back inner cover, CD and spine
Front cover - artist name, album name, parental advisory sticker (if necessary)
Back cover - barcode, copyright info, record label, credits for producers, track list
CD - copyright info, artist name, album name, record label
Spine - artist name, album name
The images used are usually eye catching and related to each other (whether it be a person, object, color or symbol) with the front cover showing a clear picture of the artist
6 September 2023 - Before actually making the official digipak, our teacher gave us the class time to practice making one through following the typical conventions of a digipak. Since we already started filming a bit and had some pictures of Caylee, Angelo and Allyson, we tried using the photographs we took to create a trial digipak. I did the CD while Charlize did the front and back cover.
8 September 2023 - All famous artists have social media pages to connect with their fans which helps attract new audiences thus gaining popularity, however, this can only be done if the artist's account is well posted and clear for everyone to understand. Most artists follow the same typical conventions when deciding what to posts which include
album release
tour dates
merchandise
aesthetic pictures of themselves relating to the album
random photos of the artist
Their social media page must also include
the artist's face as their profile picture
artist name as the user name (which can be an alias)
bio relating to their album
links to other important sites (ie music video on youtube, downloading the album on different streaming platforms, merch sites, concert website)
highlights
verified account
usually high follower count
9 September 2023 - Social media was probably the media product we were both most confident at since we both use Instagram and are quite familiar with it. For our first attempt in making a famous artist's social media page, we posted some professional pictures, album release post, behind the scenes moments and concerts. Since our brand color is red, most of the posts have red as their main color. Behind the scenes pictures shows audiences a fun side towards the artist, thus leading to engagement.
