Be consistent in your form and be smooth and rhythmic
Fight for your feet. Slightly turned.
Small, consistent dip for power and rhythm
Elbow under the ball and slightly turned out.
Push through the floor to lift in the air
Follow through and stick the landing
The ball will go where your hand goes!
Practice shooting on your own! Don't wait for someone to tell you to go shoot!
Practice shooting against a defender as much as you can.
Practice shooting with a friend or friends -- on target passing is important to our rhythm when we shoot! A good, on target, and on time pass helps us make shots!
These are some videos I created with my godson. Our players have done all of these and more. Create your own movements and dribbles -- always fighting for your feet to be balanced and ready to shoot!
Great shooters are on balance and ready to shoot as soon as they catch the ball. You want to catch in rhythm. We call this Fighting for Your Feet. Here are some ways to practice this with a partner using various foot movements and then landing with your shooting foot slightly ahead of the other.
Great shooters have a consistent ball pickup. When dribbling with your shooting hand you want to bring your guide hand to the ball. When dribbling with your non-shooting hand you bring the ball to your shooting hand. Here are some ways you can practice your ball pickup.
You can challenge your ball pick up, fighting for your feet, and rhythm with these movements. Don't be afraid to create your own dribble challenges!
Work on throwing strikes with your passes.
We have an on ball closeout and a help defender.
Make the shoot it or drive it decision based on the closeout.
Can work on any finishing move we have.
3 people 2 balls
Player starts without the ball. One partner passes to her and then closes out to the shooter. The shooter needs to make a shoot it or drive it decision. The other partner is at the basket and serves as a "help defender".
3 people 2 balls
Drive decision if the closeout is close to you.
3 people 2 balls
Closeout defender is now the next shooter. Relocate, catch on a hop with your chest to the ball and make the shoot it or drive it decision.
3 people 2 balls
Now 3 would be the shooter and everything simply repeats.
Practicing the decision when to shoot is often overlooked. Here is one way to do it.
Defender starts with the ball. She passes to either player and then closes out to either player. The person who catches the ball has to make the shoot it or move it decision. Shoot it if you have the big advantage or move it if your teammate has the big advantage.
Same set up except the defender works on a pass off the dribble.
Shoot it or Move it Decisions
Being ready to shoot on the catch allows us to make decisions quickly.
