The following page features the humble beginnings of this novel. If you don't want to ruin the surprise, skip this page.
Kilima is the center of the story – a boarding school in the county of West Yorkshire, England, placed on a hill. About 300 students are living their daily life inside the modern school walls. In addition, there are teachers and other school staff such as a janitor and office personnel.
"The canteen, sleeping quarters for pupils and teachers, a library, 18 classrooms, five recreation rooms, a staff room, offices, two student meeting rooms with leisure activities and storage rooms were spread over three barrier-free floors and a basement. There was fast internet and a variety of school meals to suit all tastes and needs. In short, the Kilima boarding school had everything you would expect from a modern school."
It's a good life. No unpleasant surprises, a friendly community, varied leisure activities, good food, sometimes strict but always fair teachers. Until one fateful day…
It occurs on an ordinary Tuesday on August 2021, right after the end of a hot summer day. An enigmatic event disrupts the daily life at the school of Kilima. The entire school awakes from a fainting spell. Students, teachers, the whole school staff – all of them awake in a strange, new body. The body of an anthropomorphic animal. One of them is 16-year-old Jordan Donovan. Jordan, like the rest of his schoolmates, is shocked, in panic, in fear. A dream? A bad joke? It must be… But it's not. It is really him.
"Those were not his hands! Not his arms! Not his legs! His whole body was covered in black fur. He felt his face, which had mutated into a long snout, and his head, from which two pointed ears were now sticking up."
Not only did the transformation pour oil into the fire. Things also have changed outside the windows. Kilima is still standing on a familiar looking hill. But the environment has completely changed. They are no longer in England anymore. But where are they? How did they get there? And why?
The whole school descends into chaos. Like everyone else in the common room, Jordan would have loved to vanish into thin air. Most of the disturbed youngsters are hiding in fear. But he couldn't afford that luxury. In the end, he follows the call of his headmaster into the auditorium to an emergency meeting. No one else in the common rooms actually listens to the call.
Jordan has problems controlling the new fox-like body of his. There's no place for his tail in his pants, the skeleton structure of his legs is bent and his shoes won't fit anymore. But he slowly manages to adapt. After a short walk through a ghostly, extinct corridor of his school, he hears someone calling him by his name.
"Jordan glanced over his shoulder as he continued to follow the corridor. He knew the voice. But the person the voice belonged to was a complete stranger to him. He was tall, broad-shouldered, his whole body covered in brown fur. Two incisors protruded from his upper jaw and a paddle tail from his buttocks. A beaver? Or a marmot? Jordan couldn't tell. But then his steps slowed. The Gemini-zodiac silver chain the student wore around his neck and the basketball shirt... Could it be...?"
It is Marc, one of Jordans class mates, now in the form of a human-sized beaver. Both are baffled about what happened to them and the entire school. Both of them make it to the auditorium safe and sound. Not many other students are here, and those who are have all turned into different kinds of anthropomorphic animals. The same applies to adults. The mysterious event made no exceptions. The headmaster of the boarding school, Professor Harris Campbell, tries his level best to calm the students down – with moderate success. To make matters worse, the school suffers from a power failure. And one of the teachers reports from a monster attack in the basement.
Most of the staff members are overwhelmed by the situation and can’t decide what to do. The teacher for carpentry and business economics, Edward Zimmerman (now in the form of a marten), wants to investigate and fight off the creatures before they make it to the upper floors. Also, there's a a emergency power generator in the basement. A supporter of this plan is Jordan’s class mate Ricarda, who has turned into an ostrich. Marc feels the same way and persuades Jordan to accompany them into the basement. Jordan agrees unwillingly.
The four former humans are able to reach the classroom for carpentry lessons. They arm themselves with tools and other provisional weapons and make their way to the storage room where they are being attacked by abominations.
"Jordan tore his eyes open in horror. He stared directly into the dripping mouth of a monster that must have sprung from hell itself - with protruding, yellow gnawing teeth as long as a child's arms. The elongated creature seemed to consist almost entirely of overlapping, dirty folds of skin. Only the top layer was covered in sparse, gray-brown fur, punctuated by pus-filled, bloated boils that pushed out of the bald patches. Some had already burst open, and yellow, viscous pus oozed from the wounds like blood from a fresh wound."
The humans are able to fend off (and kill) the creatures. But in the end, it was only partly thanks to the weapons they had. Jordan killed the mole-like creature with a strange power that awoke in him. He could form and use fire from nothing. No one, not even Jordan himself, could explain what had happened. But Kilima was safe - for now.
The day after the incident in the basement the school staff is holding a meeting and discusses the next steps. They end up with an endless list of questions and problems. They fear some sort of camp fever and riots might arise. The teacher Iris Stone (teacher for social studies and guidance counselor and now an iguana-like human) also mentions the poor mental state of many, many students due to their transformation.
At this very day Ricarda is trying to visit her younger brother Jeremy, only to find her brother barricading himself. He even refuses to answer Ricarda's plea of opening the door. Only after Ricarda threatens to burst down the door Jeremy opens it hesitantly, but escapes in his room the very moment after.
"Ricarda simply didn't know how to help herself, nor did she know how to comfort her brother in this situation. She picked up the remains of the socks and placed them on a table. Then she pulled back the curtains a little and opened the window a crack. Only then did she sit down on the edge of Jeremy's bed. In silence. Minutes passed. Then suddenly Jeremy's muffled voice came from under the covers."
The boy is confused, scared. His big sister manages to comfort him, even persuades him to leave to room to grab some food.
While investigating the situation and collecting as many information as they can, the staff of the Kilima school tries to create a form of everyday life – regular class sessions as a form of distraction and normality. A bold move. Many students are still afraid and refuse to leave their rooms. However, just like Jeremy more and more of the transformed humans are daring the first steps back into social life again. It's a slow process. But the familiar environment inside the human-made school provides a feel of safety and gives them courage; unaware that their presence in this new world had not gone unnoticed.
On a fateful day, life at Kilima School is shattered. Strange figures appear on the doorstep of the school. Just like the residents of the boarding school, these visitors are also anthropomorphic animals. However, they are very distinct in their behavior and appearance.
"Jordan counted a dozen of them. Most of them belonged to different species: Wolf-like and jackal-like, big cats and even-toed ungulates. Men and women. But there was also a bird creature among them. Some of them were clad in airy, semi-circular robes that looked like clothing from ancient times. Others wore casual clothes - pieces of leather fastened with laces and strings, showing a lot of fur and leaving little to the imagination. One of the robed men walked at the front and looked like a panther. His astral white robe accentuated the night-colored fur and yellow-green eyes. To the left and right of him walked two strikingly large animal figures that looked like personal bodyguards. The rest of the group was positioned slightly behind them."
The meeting between the fundamentally different cultures in the entrance area of the school gives the impression of a powder keg about to explode. Fortunately, it never comes to that. The panther-like man introduces himself as Krollwor, the speaker of the community of Ukoo, and he states his peaceful intentions. Despite his clearly peaceful motivations, his aura is mighty, even terrifying. Headmaster Harris Campbell treats him respectfully and convinces him that they too are no threat.
The first contact between the two cultures stays peaceful. A private meeting between the leadership of the Kilima school and the community of Ukoo takes place. Krollwor listens curiously to the story about the arrival and transformation of humans. Unfortunately, he doesn't know anything about humans at all or the reasons about their arrival in the world which he calls "Nyika".
During the meeting, Krollwor explains more and more about his world and the people living inside it. He is a beast, just like all the other residents of the community of Ukoo. He also considers the former humans as beasts as well; especially after he heard about the incident with the student Jordan Donovan. beasts and pori, the hostile creatures roaming around the world of Nyika, are able to shape and manipulate the elements. It's the way this world functions.
“If you speak the truth, then your appearance is not just that of beasts. You are one of us. We are all born with this gift. We commune with the elements around us and give them form. There is no exception.”
The speaker emphasizes the obligation that the formerly humans have now. Because Nyika is founded on a system of balance, the people of Kilima could have an negative impact on this world. Therefore, Krollwor invites his new friends to the community of Ukoo to learn more about this world. The headmaster is cautious and insecure. In the end, he agrees.
Jordan, Marc and Ricarda are a couple of the people chosen by the staff of Kilima to visit the native village. The three students are excited and curious. However, they are unsure about what the balance system is all about. Is it just a form of exaggerated religious belief? Or is there more to it? And is it true? Are the humans now beasts as well? Does the incident in the basment of the school proof anything?
“But we're not beasts,” Ricarda murmured thoughtfully, ”at least not real ones. Maybe we look like them, but...” She stopped abruptly, her brown ostrich eyes fixed on the small, unsteadily flickering flame that Jordan was making dance on his outstretched palm. “Awesome!” she breathed. The guidance counselor was speechless. Marc's open mouth also found no words for this spectacle.
Jordan didn't know what had gotten into him. Suddenly he felt like an exotic animal in a zoo again, and the glass box tightened its walls. “It's... actually quite easy,” he said, his glassy gaze fixed on the fire above his paw-like hand. “I've tried it again and again over the last few days. At one point I was alternately hot and cold. Then suddenly it was there. Whenever I wanted it. I can literally call it by name in my mind and it answers me. It calls out to me.”
On a slightly overcast Saturday morning, 20 students and three teachers set off for the Ukoo community. They are accompanied by so-called defenders – guards of the settlement. It is the first time they have set foot outside since their arrival in Nyika. Shortly after they reach the outside of the school, the differences between the worlds become more and more clear.
There were trees that were curved like a corkscrew. Their outer yellowish-brown bark peeled off like withered paper at the mere touch, and a layer of many-hued, orange mushrooms then instantly formed there. Some of the deciduous trees were surrounded by a ring of waist-high ferns. White tubers grew on the almost spindly leaves, the stench of which brought tears to Jordan's eyes. And then there were trees that had neither leaves nor needles, but simply a sea of bitter-smelling, black-purple flowers growing on their branches.
As exotic and varied as the flora is, the fauna was barren and desolate. The world of Nyika has unfamiliar insects. But that's all Jordan spots during his exploration. No birds chirping, no rustling in the undergrowth. It feels unnatural. But he remembers the warnings: Appearances are deceptive. This world is inhabited by dangerous creatures: Pori. Fortunately, there is no encounter and they finally reach their destination: the community of Ukoo.
The settlement is a cluster of simple huts made of wood and clay inside a protective wall. Some of the huts are adjacent to allotment gardens. There is a fireplace and a well, as well as a large watchtower that rises up in the center of the settlement. The visitors are eyed with great interest. Not fear or caution, but curiosity is reflected in the eyes of the inhabitants.
"Three beasts - all children - stopped their game of tag around the extinguished campfire as the new arrivals passed them. Jordan estimated the two girls and the boy to be little more than six human years old. But unlike in Kilima, the children's eyes seemed more curious than cautious. All the adults who looked out of the open wooden windows or were outside were also watching the strangers with interest. Jordan noticed that all the children were wearing the same clothes, albeit slightly different colors: On their legs, a long, thin piece of cloth knotted at the waist, and no outerwear. Jordan doubted that the offspring belonged to the same household and believed that the choice of clothing was no coincidence. Although the children were all beasts, they clearly belonged to different species - two wore fur, one girl wore feathers. Jordan now suspected that the beasts' vocation could be traced back to their wardrobe. And with these children, their careers were probably not yet decided."
The visitors from the Kilima school receive a friendly welcome by Krollwor, the speaker of the Ukoo community. He shares the story of the founding of this world: Six evil creatures, the corruptors, led by a vile demon, once haunted the world. At that time, the elements roamed the world freely and unbound. Nyika was on the brink of annihilation. Four creatures, the keepers however stood up against the threat. They prevailed and ended the tyranny of the corrupters. The four elements were their forging tools with which they shaped the land according to their will. In the same moment, they breathed the gift of life into the beasts and made them into their children. The pori also saw the light of day on this day and became a natural counterpart to the Beasts. In this world of Nyika, balance was the greatest gift and the foundation of the world itself. As the heirs of the keepers, it was the beasts' responsibility to watch over this balance and not getting corrupted by lower instincts.
Jordan and the rest of the visitors get their first lesson in mastering the elements. They learn quickly and soon achieve their first positive results. They also show great creativity. Krollwor is satisfied with the interest and the open mindedness of their visitors and promises to teach other people from the Kilima school as well and to support the school in the time of need.
A couple of peaceful, yet educational days pass by. On a day steeped in history, the students Zoey Evans and Amy Bloomberg, joined by librarian Marjory Blanc, make a discovery. During their search for answers about the mysterious incident that brought them to this world, they find a similar event in a book about strange and inexplicable events. A man with the name Marvin King and his entire property went missing ten years ago. The book describes Marvin King as a lunatic who fantasized about a world of talking, intelligent animals several times.
The discovery in the school library is the first link between the different worlds and a beacon of hope. Unfortunately, on the very same day the school is being attacked by pori. Through the collaboration between students and the defenders of the Ukoo community the school can be saved. The former humans also emerged victorious thanks to the great progress they have made in mastering the elements. In a meeting between Harris Campbell and Krollwor, the principal demands more defenders. However, the speaker of the Ukoo community declines. The incident shows that the former humans can now defend themselves, says Krollwor. They continue to negotiate. In the end, the topic is postponed to another day. Another topic of this meeting is the mysterious figure of Marvin King. Campbell asks Krollwor about the man, and it turns out the very person once visited the community. His trail leads to the east to a community called Yapili
The librarian tries to convince the school's headmaster to go out into the world to look for Marvin King. It is a fiery dispute. Campbell fears about the safety of the students and the pori threat. Blanc argues that no more answers can be found inside the school. She also emphasizes the threat of food shortages and the importance of getting back to their world. Ultimately, the principal gives in.
Out of a total of 300 students, twelve are selected. These twelve students have made an outstanding contribution to the well-being of the school through their achievements and become emissaries. Jordan is one of them. Also Zoey and Amy, Marc and Ricarda. Together with the rest of the emissaries, they listen to the explanations about their mission: to go out to find Marvin King or an explanation about the incident. The interest is considerable, and almost everyone is willing to take on the task, including Jordan. He and five others are heading out into the world in search of the man Marvin King. In search of answers. And in search of a way back. What will they find? Will they succeed? And what mysteries will await them? To be continued… in the full release of "Kilima – School of the Beasts".
