Artist Bio

Kiel Orji (b.1995) is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist and Streetwear Designer based In Lagos.

He is the mind behind Odd Surface and the co-founder of an independent creative collectives, Popartii.

Orji’s creative practice is an exchange between working over a variety of surfaces, from digital paintings and murals to luxury fashion apparel and footwear. He creates statement pieces that are a professional reflection of his cool, calm collective ideals and with specificity, creates pieces that are pleasing to the senses.

Artist Statement

Kiel’s work speaks about a depth in the colourful rebellion against the socio-political nuances of life in Nigeria. He explores these ideas through a digital based mode of practice by incorporating the movements of afro-futurism, street art and pop art to depict youth culture, radicalism, and personal histories.

His practice is influenced by Nigeria’s subjectivity, where he introspectively addresses the logs of entanglement portrayed in society through visual representation of characters, societal themes and systems of oppression, injustice, corruption and survival.

Kiel’s practice intends to revolutionise the scape of Nigerian contemporary visual art, and unapologetically inspires artists of his generation to unveil their stories digital medium.

He has worked with companies Such as Bolt, Uber, Ebony Life Place, Lagos Continental Hotel, Ever care Group and more.
