Doak, Seth, Ana, and Douglas are starting a new semester. Ana is awoken by the tremors that have been happening for several weeks. On his way out the door, Douglas has a conversation with his emotionally-distant father, Thomas Glazebrook, about earning his pride. On the way to school, Seth sees a pile of radioactive material off the road, but it disappears when he turns his back. We see Doak's relationship with his father is strained.
The town is talking about the disappearance of Amanda and Jessica Torres, two sisters who went missing while canoeing on Pentwater Lake. In the school, the players see their mother putting up missing signs on the bulletin board. They also meet a new student named Serena, who doesn't fit in well and has already gotten into a fight with two football players in the parking lot that morning. Douglas meets up with Rodney, a tall, muscular, slightly thick-skulled student who speaks only in the third person.
Ana hears a birdsong coming from a custodial closet on her way to class. She takes a look and sees a small canary in a cage, but it disappears once she turns her back. In Seth and Ana's biology class, the teacher briefly discusses the issue of overpopulation.
In the locker room for gym, Doak notices a bloody mess in a bathroom stall, and sees the mirror is cracked. When he tries to take a look, he is caught by Douglas and Rodney and they begin to question him. Before they can get too much information from him, the fire alarm begins to ring.
While preparing for gym class, Ana notices the new student getting ready in the corner. Ana decides to approach her and introduces herself. Serena briefly introduces herself in turn, but she is not very talkative. They then proceed to the gym and start playing dodgeball. During the game, Serena proves to be exceptionally skilled at dodging the incoming balls, drawing attention to herself. Realizing this, she quickly leaves the gym and Ana follows her. Serena pulls the fire alarm.
Douglas and Rodney flee the boys locker room, taking Doak with them. In the parking lot, they start to interrogate Doak. Ana and Serena, who are nearby, become aware of the situation and decide to help. Seth also sees what is happening and joins in. Doak explains to the group what he saw in the bathroom stall. In a moment of desperation, Doak tries to escape through the crowd of students, but he is quickly recaptured. However, during the chase, Doak tells Coach Wright about the mess he saw in the boys' locker room, and says Douglas and Rodney were there. She rushes into the building. Shortly thereafter, the teachers begin shouting and searching for a student named Harris Kelly.
The players then spot Amanda and Jessica Torres at the edge of the woods near the school. The two are observing the scene, looking around with great interest. After a brief moment, they turn around and walk into the woods.
The students are summoned back into the school. Douglas, Rodney, Doak, and Serena are called to the principal's office where they are met by Principal Groff, Coach Wright, Sheriff Sam Silver, and the father of Harris Kelly. They are shown a security tape which depicts the events outside the locker room. The tape shows a small and scrawny freshman entering the room, followed by Doak, and then Douglas and Rodney. The three boys flee the room after the fire alarm is pulled, but Harris never leaves. The Sheriff informs them that they can't be charged with kidnapping Harris, since they were still in the school after he went missing. However, he warns them to watch their back, and the father of Harris Kelly glares at them silently throughout the conversation.
After school, the group meets in the parking lot and decides to follow the trail of Amanda and Jessica Torres who they had seen walking into the woods. Rodney decides not to join them and stays behind. They follow the tracks north and come across a piece of silver reflective cloth hanging from a tree branch. Upon examination, they discover that it is the mask of a hazmat suit with the name "H.O.M.E." written on it.
Continuing their journey, they eventually reach the Old Docks, a group of run-down and abandoned wooden and sheet-metal buildings located on the shore. They see Amanda and Jessica Torres kneeling on the pier, and Jessica reaching down into the water. Suddenly, a dark hand reaches up and grabs her, pulling her below the surface. Amanda sees Doak watching everything.
Amanda stands up and walks to Doak, asking him what he saw, and not answering any questions. She denies her sister was ever there. She walks away into the woods. The team decides it is time to get out of there, as it has been night for some time, but agree to reconvene in the morning, which is a saturday. On their way home, they are accosted by Greg Kelly, Harris' father. He threatens them, and says he believes they have something to do something with his son's disapearance. He started the Nightwatch, a group of concerned citizens looking out for the kids of the town after all the recent disapearences.
The next morning, Douglas meets with Ana at Le Petit Table, a cafe in the French Quarter of town. After struggling to order, Ana and Douglas head out to find the others. Seth wakes up and sees his family, including mother, father, and brother have all left already for work. He steps outside and sees Doak walking by at the end of his street, heading for "Crapiness Hill", the run down park in the north of town. Serena and Seth follow him, and see he is reading through a magazine he has hidden in a tree. They see it is a parts manual for a record player. Ana and Douglas arrive at the park. Serena pulls out a couple walkie talkies, and shares them with the group so they can coordinate easier.
They decide to head back to the Old Docks. While there, they inspect the location where Jessica disappeared under the water. They see no sign of her, but they see something strange about the reflection, where their background is different from the sky, where they seem to have a roof above them. Seth interrupts the reflection with a stick, and it returns to normal. Doak, while exploring an old shack, finds a beaten up lunch box with business cards inside. A few are for a man named Remi de le Croix, who is the CEO of H.O.M.E., as well is one for Thomas Glazebrook, who is the regional manager of H.O.M.E..
Their exploration is interrupted by Rodney, who finds them at the Old Docks. The team realizes something is off when he begins speaking in first person. He tells the group the Torres sisters are back, and he saw them downtown an hour ago. The team tackles him, which causes him to be injured. Douglas and Serena decide to take him to the hospital, while Seth and Doak will continue to explore. On their way into town, Douglas and Serena see more Nightwatch vans driving around. They also see a H.O.M.E. service van parked in front of Rodney's house. On the side of the van is the slogan ""Future-proofed Homes for a Growing World"
