Context:
Using one of Bras Basah’s atrium space, we were tasked to identify a fond memory we had as a child and recreate that experience into a spatial experience. Touching on the 5 senses and our site specific understanding of the arts, cultural & historical aspect of Bras Basah Complex (231 Bain St, Singapore 180231).
Flow Exploration
Childhood Experience
My experience as a child at the aquarium felt like a dream to me + the movement of fishes in uniform movement was mesmerizing. As I walked through the glass tunnel where fishes could swim above and around you, I was so immersed that I felt like I was really in this underwater world of mine. When I went to the Aquarium, I went with my whole family the interactions I had with my parents, grandparents and siblings made it so much more fun especially having a common ground to talk about (the aquatic creatures).
Experimentation
Expressing fluid movement under water within my exhibit proved to be difficult without being too direct with the use of actual water. I decided to use organic forms, light permeation and translucency to covey that feel and wanted to see if it evokes certain feelings within such a space. Thus I experimented using cardboard and acrylic panels accompanied by simple alternating pieces to give a feeling of flow. The shadow casted and sparkle made gave off the movement followed by the kinetic movement of the ceiling which felt like you are under the water blanket of the ocean/aquarium.

The Journey
Activities
The Interactive Terrain in my “Underwater Dreamscape” is a recreational space where people can come together and have fun, chit chat or simply rest and enjoy a book. The space is open for anyone to use, people can also book the space for a small-sized concert, we could also invite some Xinyao Singers to let people relive their memories when Bras Basah used to host Xinyao Concerts (more site-specific)
5 senses
The design aims to evoke an underwater experience through touch, sight, and hearing. The space intends to emulate a modern and clinical ambiance akin to an aquarium, with smooth surfaces. Visually, it features alternating pieces and smooth curves reminiscent of fish movement, coupled with a depth floor that might evoke a slight scare yet captivate with beautiful transparent structures akin to mesmerizing jellyfish. The auditory experience involves simulating the deep sea at night for an eerie atmosphere, complemented by calming lo-fi music to create a dream-like sensation. As visitors enter, activating sounds aim to instantly immerse them in an "Underwater Dreamscape," fostering an immediate connection to the space.
Underwater Dreamscape
Overview
Underwater Dreamscape is an experiential, recreational and flexible space taking the cultural and historical value into consideration of the space attracting people to the space more than once. It conveys my childhood experience together with its limitless imagination.
Night Life
There will be a Day and Night Exhibition that will encourage people to visit more than once + the space can be rented out to people to host parties, concerts, events etc. At night, the exhibition space is to let people experience the Beauty within Darkness. (Jellyfishes at the aquarium were stunning especially with the bright and colorful lights it emitted within the scary darkness)
