In 2026, The Korea Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS) marks three decades since it opened in 1996 as Korea's first institute devoted purely to theoretical and foundational science, modeled on Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. This site gathers our 30th Anniversary programs — a look back at three decades of research, a symposium on science and society, and an academic celebration honoring the scholars shaping the next thirty years.

A place built for research

KIAS occupies a research-friendly campus in Hongneung, Seoul, where scholars work free of teaching and administrative duties — the model it borrowed from Princeton in 1996.
