IIT Math Camp
Many people see math as nothing but a subject with a lot of incomprehensible rules to remember. However, mathematics is not just about numbers, equations, and rules, it's more than that. Yet most people have not seen a well-constructed mathematical proof on the infinitude of primes, or know how mathematics can be used to solve problems ranging from optimizing web searches to taking a picture of a black hole in the center of galaxy M 87. Changing the inaccurate perceptions of mathematics through public engagement, and introducing students to mathematics not typically seen in school are the main reasons to have this camp.
I've orchestrated the development and implemented the first IIT Math Camp, and despite COVID-19 pandemic, the camp was successfully completed on August 7th, 2020. From California to New Jersey, and from Japan to Canada, a total of 37 students across countries and continents have participated in this program virtually. Topics such as methods of proof, modulo arithmetic, counting techniques, and probability were presented in Math Camp I, while various concepts in graph theory and group theory were presented in Math Camp II, each camp lasted for 5 days long.
I hope this program manages to give students entry into the deep ideas of mathematics, and creates opportunities for all students to develop a passion for mathematics.
