Our Geography program at Kyung Hee University is a Korean program, and an international student needs a TOPIK score to be accepted to the program. I cannot accept those who canont speak Korean because of this official restriction. Please email me in Korean and let me know your TOPIK score before contacting me. Please refer to https://iadmission.khu.ac.kr/gglobalcenter/user/main/view.do for more information. If you cannot speak Korean, you can consider a few other graduate programs at Kyung Hee that are offered in English only, such as the International School or the Global Hospitality and Tourism program.
GKS scholarship is the most renowned support by the Korean government, so you might want to try applying for it. We have had a GKS recipient in my department. At the department level, we care about the funding of graduate students, so earning a GKS scholarship would be a big plus for you wherever you apply in Korea. You can also try exploring some other options, such as the one offered by POSCO (https://www.postf.org/en/asia/abroad/purpose).
In my department, students normally contact the potential advisor before applying for the program. Before contacting the professor, please study research interests of the potential advisor. Please consider research fit. It would be great if you could share your research interests and information about your background. Also, if you are clear about what to do during your Master's/Ph.D. studies, it will be easier for you to graduate early and safely. So, when you contact a professor, please let the professor know what you want to accomplish during your Master's/Ph.D. and what exactly you want to research.
Please do consider the value of studying in Korea and think about how you can survive here.
Summary: if you are interested in studying in Korea, I would strongly recommend that you try a GKS scholarship and get decently ready to adjust to the Korean (working) culture. Safely completing the program is as important as getting accepted to a program! Good luck!
Please consider the following.
1. Employment and Funding
At Kyung Hee University, employment for international scholars is typically funded by individual professors rather than the university, and the majaor paperwork is done by the professors.
Research funds can be used for employment if a professor has secured sufficient funding to hire an overseas scholar.
In order to sponsor a visa, the professor in Korea should pay a reasonable amount of money for Ph.D.-level researchers.
University-level job openings are generally restricted to teaching or non-paid adjunct positions.
2. Visa and Sponsorship
Short-term Visits: International scholars from certain countries can generally stay in Korea without a visa for about one to three months for unpaid research and networking.
University Programs: KHU offers "International Scholar"/"Eminent Scholar" programs, typically providing a C-3-1 visa. These programs are generally for tenure-track professors who commit to high publication output with a double affiliation with KHU.
Sabbatical Visits: Based on Suh-hee's previous experiences hosting full-time professors at foreign universities for their sabbatical leave in Korea, the university (Kyung Hee) has been able to sponsor visas for Ph.D.-level researchers planning long-term sabbatical visits.
Administrative Process: Sponsoring a visa requires the inviting professor to complete significant administrative paperwork.
3. Considerations before contacting our lab
Before contacting us to inquire about a visiting position, scholars might want to consider the following. If you are clearer about your objective of staying in Korea, please let us know by email to Suh-hee Choi.
Primary Objective: Determine if the main goal is networking, increasing research output, or seeking payment. Please let us know what you can do for our lab. Timely and visible deliverables are appreciated.
Dual Affiliation: If seeking a paid position (E-3 visa), confirm if your home institution allows dual affiliation and payment from two separate employers. When sponsoring an E-3 visa, Korean regulations regarding dual payment are extremely strict. The Ph.D. researcher must work full-time in Korea only.
Funding Priorities: Applicants should note that laboratory funds are often prioritized for current Ph.D. students to support their graduation.
