The Cultural and Tourism Geography Laboratory (a.k.a. the Mobilities Lab) is a leading research hub dedicated to examining how the mobilities of people, goods, and information interact across spatial scales through the lens of geography. In an increasingly interconnected world, our mission is to decode the complex dynamics of mobilities and their profound impact on geography, society, and economies.
At the heart of our laboratory lies the Paradigm of Mobilities. We go beyond simple transit to study the intricate spatial practices and place experiences of diverse groups, including international migrants, leisure travelers, and temporary residents. By understanding how these individuals perceive and interact with their environments, we provide deep insights into the evolving nature of modern space.
Our academic inquiries are structured around several specialized areas of expertise:
Small-Scale Enterprise Ecosystems: We investigate the sustainability of commercial areas and local tourism, supported by major initiatives such as the MSIT and NRF Korea projects (2022–2029).
VFR (Visiting Friends and Relatives) Mobilities: Our research explores the social and geographical dimensions of VFR travel, contributing to the broader understanding of human connections and movement.
Place Branding & Public Diplomacy: We analyze how locations define their identity and communicate their value on a global stage through strategic branding and cultural diplomacy.
Asian Regional Studies: We conduct extensive comparative research on cross-cultural experiences, perceptions of traditional culture, and the transformation of tourism spaces throughout the Asian continent.
Collaboration is the cornerstone of our success. The Cultural and Tourism Geography Laboratory is proud to foster an international research network that transcends borders. We are honored to work alongside distinguished visiting scholars.
Through these partnerships, we continue to push the boundaries of geographical research, contributing to both academic discourse and the development of sustainable tourism policies worldwide. We invite you to explore our projects and join us in our journey to understand the changing world through the eyes of cultural geography.
