Looking for the official Kids Heart Challenge website?
American Heart Challenge is a Kids Heart Challenge event that "grew up" with its participants. This is an opportunity for students to take a "pulse check" on how well they practice heart-healthy habits and a refresher on how to perform hands-only CPR and spot a stroke F.A.S.T. - with an age-appropriate focus on anti-vaping, mental health, and benefits for students that include service hours and the chance to win a college scholarship for participating juniors and seniors.
WHEN DO WE HOST?
When it's best for your school! You may consider February for Heart Month or later in the spring semester to engage students short of service hours.
HOW LONG DO WE HOST?
However long is best for your school! Ideally, it's 2 - 3 weeks for students to implement the learning into their life, but even a 1-day field day is a win!
WHO HOSTS?
A student leadership group with a staff sponsor for student body input and guidance for district policies from an adult. We've seen NJHS, NHS, Student Council, Hope Squad, AVID, HOSA, and more run fun and successful AHC events!
WHO WINS?
All students and staff can take a "pulse check" on their health. Students can earn up to ten (10) on-campus service hours. Juniors and seniors can earn a $1,000 college scholarship. Staff who can receive PD hours for hosting the program. Schools can receive up to $2,500 in grant funding. Families impacted by cardiovascular issues can survive because of the life-saving difference you've made. Really, who doesn't?
Every 3 and 1/2 days, we lose a student athlete to sudden cardiac arrest - like Matthew. The best intervention is a heart-healthy lifestyle and the knowledge of how to save a life. This is WHY everyone needs to know hands-only CPR and how to use an AED.
Finn is now in third grade (2024) and lives a healthy life because of the American Heart Association and students like you. Raising funds for AHA can change and save the lives of children like Finn who were born with congential heart defects (CHDs).
Students will pay a set amount to participate in a physical activity held during advisory, final period, right after school, or during the school day on an early release day to secure attendance.
This physical event can be a staff-student volleyball, dodgeball, or basketball competition or even a very simple fun run/walk/5K on campus. Students can dress up for the event and build teams!
Students gain knowledge during advisory periods and complete their donation and learning at home. We may include Dress Up Days, with clear expectations of the theme and dress code communicated.
This allows for minimal removal from instruction while students and the school community alike still receive the benefits of AHC.
Have a tangible reminder for students.
Have the principal send a weekly email (including kick-off email) with impact possible thus far.
Broadcast videos during advisory (including YHA advocate).
Have an AHA presence at lunch to answer questions.
Have on-campus comms (incl. posters).
Share wrap-up email with total impact made possible.
