I participated in 2024 Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) in New Orleans. My proposal aimed to facilitate area-wide management efforts through an online platform. The back bone of this proposal is a bieconomic model that I developed and presented as a poster at the same AAEA meeting. The model integrates epidemiological dynamics with grower behavior and economic incentives, aiming to enhance collective outcomes through informed, decentralized action.
This was an extremely rewarding process and received insightful feedback from several leading extension economists. Here are the link to my proposal and presentation slides. There are a couple of takeaways for me.
Clarity over complexity – I learned that even the most rigorous models need a simple, intuitive framing when communicating with a diverse audience. Being able to distill the essence of the bioeconomic model—what it does, why it matters, and how it can be used—was essential to keeping the audience engaged and generating meaningful dialogue.
Visual storytelling matters – The experience also highlighted the value of clear visuals. Effective use of diagrams, flowcharts, and conceptual maps helped convey the dynamics of disease spread and decision-making processes more powerfully than text-heavy slides or equations alone. I received compliments on the visual structure of my poster, which helped spark discussions and made the research more approachable.
