In year one, our team created a design for our idea Streetcharge for the mayor's entrepreneur competition, introduced to us through the Design and Practice module. By embedding charging receptacles directly into the pavement, flush with the ground, Streetcharge aims to improve the infrastructure for charging electric vehicles (EVs) parked on city streets and near residential homes. By allowing EV chargers to take this form, they can be installed in places where they would otherwise be a nuisance or rejected by organizations that want to preserve an area's scenic or historic quality as well as pedestrian space. The design ended up winning the judge's award choice with a £20,000 prize.
