Travel

Kharagpur is well connected to major parts of the country by train. It is approximately 120 km to the west of Kolkata. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport, Kolkata (CCU) is the nearest airport. IIT Kharagpur campus is 140 km from the airport. Travel time by taxi ranges between 2 to 3 hours depending on the traffic conditions.

You may take a direct train from your city/town to one of the stations in Kharagpur (Hijli Railway station and Kharagpur Railway station), if available. Otherwise, you can arrive at the Howrah Railway station (or Sealdah or Kolkata railway station) in Kolkata and from their either take any train which passes through Kharagpur or an app-based cab.  For additional information, we refer you to the IIT KGP official link.



Kharagpur junction railway station to IIT KGP

Come out of the main gate/side of the Kharagpur junction railway station. You will have the option of taking a taxi, autorickshaw, totos [small electric rickshaws],  etc.

Taxi [INR 150-200]: There is a taxi stand nn the right hand side of entrance when you are coming out of the station. 

Autorickshaws are available on the road in front of the station.

Ask to be dropped at your accommodation [MMM hall or Gokhale hall as the case may be] inside the campus. The taxi or autorickshaw will have to make an entry at the entrance. You maybe asked to show your id card, etc.

Hijli station to IIT Campus: It is just behind the IIT Campus. Take an electric auto rickshaw to come to the campus.

Your Stay @IITKGP

Accommodation

Participants coming from outside will be staying in student hostels, known as "student halls" in KGP. Male participants will be styaing in the Madan Mohan Malviya Hall of Residence and the female participants will be staying in the Gokhale Hall of Residence (http://www.hmc.iitkgp.ac.in/web/bachelor-accomodation/). You will be provided shared accommodation in these halls.

Check-in: When on campus, kindly go straight to the Hall of Residence and introduce yourself at the reception (during working hours) or security (outside the working hours). You will be asked to show valid government ID. Also carry your institute ID card. Hall manager/attended/security will guide you to your room and give additional instructions regarding your stay.

On campus transport: Raman Auditorium, Department of Physics, eateries, etc. are within walking distance from your place of accommodation. However, we have arranged for the Institute buses to carry participants from the Halls to the Lecture hall, Lecture hall to the venue of lunch and dinner.

Food [Updated]

You have several options for your food at IITKGP. There are many restaurants and eateris on campus. Given the tight schedule of the program/lectures having food in the hall mess would be the most optimal and safer solution. Note you will have to cover the cost of food.

(i) Hall messes

MMM Hall mess: Currently a private mess is running inside the hall. You can take your breakfast, lunch and dinner in the mess on a payment basis. The food cost is very reasonable. You can pay in cash or using your by scaning a QR-code. Also, you can pay for the entire duration at once or on a case to case basis.

BF (starting INR 25 for one item): You can choose among Poha, Upma, Dosa, Butter-Jam-bread, Paratha-Sabji, etc. You can request for Milk [INR 15 for 150 ml], boiled eggs, banana, etc.

Lunch (starting INR 25): The basic meal [unlimited] will cover Daal, Rice, Roti. You can choose from 5 types of Sabji for INR 15 each. Curd INR 10. Non-veg: Chicken [INR 45]; Fish [INR 20]; Egg curry [INR 18].

Special meal on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday: Chicken Biryani [INR 120], Veg Biryani [INR 70].

Dinner (starting INR 25): The basic meal [unlimited] will cover Daal, Rice, Roti. You can choose from minimum 3 types of Sabji INR 15. Non-veg: Chicken [INR 45];  Egg curry [INR 18].

Gokhale Hall: For the participants staying in the Gokhale Hall meals will be available in the adjoining SAM Hall (Sir Aushotosh Mukherjee Hall). Structure fo the menu is similar, as above. However, details may differ. 

Kindly check with mess manager for details, exact prices and menus. Mess closes at 9 PM. 

(ii) Night canteen at J C Bose hall.

(iii) Restaurants inside the campus. For example, Smartpind (thali is very reasonable and relatively fast!), PFC, several fast food corners at Tikka near the Clock tower. For more options you can google and check or don't hesitate to ask a student.

(iv) Restaurants outside the campus. We recommend FoodStudio, Chai Break [in Inda], Dominos [in Inda], Nasha The roof top lounge [in Inda] good view and ambience.

Market and Medicines
