Class Format: In person in the NVHS Computer Lab on Wednesdays from 12:30 to 2:30pm.

Class Structure: During these 8 week long workshops, the students learn basic script writing and audio production techniques to develop a mini podcast on a topic of their choosing.

Production Software: Audacity

All work is submitted to: kgnumediagardens@gmail.com

PROJECTS:

1. Tutorial on Recording and Editing: Use the Rodecatser Pro to interview a peer while recording yourselves on Ableton. This will serve as our warm up exercise to introduce you to the recording equipment we'll be using throughout the workshop. You will then edit your interviews on Audacity.

2. Bumper/Intro: Who are you? Name your minipodcast! This is your user ID/tag that is used as a short intro at the beginning or end of each of your stories. Gives the audience info on who/what they are listening to.

Example: "Heyo! This is Juan and you are listening to KGNU Media Gardens at New Vista High School!"

Length: 5-10 seconds.

3. Mini podcast: We will explore a vast array of podcasting styles as we analyze podcasts produced by professionals and by other youth. These podcasting styles range from personal storytelling, documentaries (interview based), audio diaries (could include recording life outside of school), audio journalism, and more. Some elements we will be looking out for: How do the podcasters introduce themselves and their topics? How do they integrate music or soundbites to elevate the piece? Based on this exploration, the students will script and produce individual mini podcasts (3 minutes minimum) on a topic of their interest.

4. Media Distribution: We will explore how public radio stations, other media companies, and independent media content creators distribute their content. After learning about their distribution strategies, the students can choose to have their parents sign the media release forms if they would like to have their content distributed by KGNU. Once shared on KGNU's platforms, the students can share the content they produced with their own networks via social media and other methods of distribution.

5. Extra! Anything else you want to write about/produce! Let's get creative!
