Konstantinos Giannakis

Short Bio

I (call me Kostas) work as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Informatics at the Ionian University since late 2025. I'm a member of the Humanistic and Social Informatics Laboratory while I, also, do research as an affiliated member of the GBD Collaborating Unit. Before that, I worked as a permanent Researcher in the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, as a team member of the Forecasting team in IHME (Seattle, WA). I got my PhD in 2016 from the Ionian University. Between 2020 and 2024, I worked as a Postdoc and then as a Researcher in the Dept. of Mathematics at the University of Bergen working with Iain Johnston and his amazing Stochastic Biology group doing exciting mathematical modeling and computational science! 

I have participated in various funded projects, and served as a reviewer and TPC member for several conferences and journals. I have attended international conferences, taught courses, given lectures, and participated in summer schools and workshops. I have extensive experience as a reviewer for international journals, conferences, and funding agencies. I have supervised and co-supervised of students at all levels, and taught different courses in both graduate and undergraduate level.

Research interests:
Public health metrics, Forecasting, Computational Intelligence, Symbolic AI, Linked Data, Bioinspired Computing, Knowledge Representation, Complex Systems.

Group members

• Konstantinos Giannakis works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Informatics at the Ionian University since late 2025 and is a member of the Humanistic and Social Informatics Laboratory. He leads this small research group. See above for more information.

• Dionisis Pylarinos is a PhD student at the Humanistic & Social Informatics Laboratory under the supervision of Konstantinos Giannakis, researching advanced multimodal learning approaches for sentiment analysis and mental health. He holds an MSc in Computer and Information Systems Security from the University of Piraeus and a BSc in Informatics from Ionian University. Alongside his doctoral studies, Dionisis bridges academic research with applied industry expertise by working as a SOC Analyst for an IT company.
