How to Turn On the Keyboard Light On Windows Computers

If you have a Windows PC, you know that there is usually a F2 or F12 key on your keyboard. These keys are used to switch the keyboard light on or off.

What if a Windows Keyboard Light Won’t Turn On?

You'll see two items in the Settings/Ease of Access menu, Keyboard Settings and Display Settings. Click on Display Settings, and the Display panel will appear.

Click on the keyboard icon, and you'll see the Keyboard Settings panel open up. If the keyboard is not working correctly, click on the "Adjust keyboard" link in the upper left corner of the keyboard panel.

Here are some basic troubleshooting steps to follow if you can’t get your keyboard to work:

1) Make sure the power cord is plugged in and connected properly.

2) Open the Device Manager.

3) Click + to expand each section.

4) Check that your keyboard is listed under “Keyboards and pointing devices” and that its state is set to “working.”

5) If you’re still having trouble, contact your keyboard manufacturer or call tech support for instructions.

On laptops, this setting allows you to adjust the keyboard backlighting to a preset brightness level. This setting can be found under the Display/Keyboard/General section of your Control Panel.

If your laptop doesn't have this setting, or if there is no manufacturer-specific section at all, this option is not available on your computer.

How to Turn on the Keyboard Light on a Mac

While it's true that many people who are not familiar with Apple products would be hard-pressed to use the feature, it's also true that many Apple customers, including those who own MacBooks, don't know about this feature.

They just see a nice, big, colorful button with an icon representing brightness on the Touch Bar, and assume they can just use it.

To get around this assumption, you have to tap on the button and then select Increase Brightness. Thereafter, you’ll see the brightness slider on the bar.

If you have a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, you can tap the < icon next to the brightness slider (located above the Touch Bar) to increase or decrease your screen brightness.

Conclusion

The exception is when a Touch Bar is present instead of Mac function keys; in that case, the Touch Bar controls the keyboard light.

The keyboard backlight controls on Macs and MacBooks are located at the right side of the keyboard, above the F keys.
