If I then press the light button on the top right, only the logo lights up. If I press again the logo turns off and the keys light up. Press again and eveything is off again. I want all the keys and the logo lighting up.

Some keyboards, like the Logitech G Pro desktop keyboard, will actually have a dedicated button that you can press to toggle the keyboard light on or off. HP notebook computers work similarly to Dell laptops: You'll need to press an assigned Function key (which could be F5, F4, or F11) with or without pressing the Fn key as well. You may need to press it multiple times to adjust the brightness or turn it off. There should also be a backlight icon stamped on the assigned Function key for your HP notebook that looks like a row of three dots with rays coming out of the first dot.

The main thing, though, is that if you don't know the keyboard shortcut or Function key assigned to your keyboard's backlighting feature, you should look it up in your PC's manufacturer's support site or manual to find out.

Certain MacBook models may have you adjust your keyboard lighting via the Touch Bar instead. To do so, tap the Arrow icon on the Touch Bar to expand its Control Strip. To turn on backlighting, tap the Increase brightness button. To turn it off, tap and hold the Decrease brightness button, which looks like a half-circle outlined in dots, not rays.

For some Windows 10 PCs, this means you'll need to access the Windows Mobility Center, which resides in the Control Panel. To access it, select Control Panel > Hardware and sound > Windows Mobility Center. In the Windows Mobility Center, look for the Keyboard brightness (or Keyboard backlighting) setting, select its corresponding slider, and pull that slider over to the right.

Some keyboards have their own specific software or app that can be used to control and customize the settings of your laptop or desktop keyboard. A great example of this is the app used for Razer's laptops and peripherals: Synapse. The Synapse app can be used to customize the lighting effects of your Razer gaming laptop's keyboard or your Razer desktop gaming keyboard. And this can include increasing or decreasing the brightness of your keyboard light or adjusting the settings so that the light stays on or off in sleep mode.

In some cases, if your laptop has the right keyboard light buttons and they still don't work the way they're supposed to, it's possible that you may need to check your device's BIOS settings and make sure that they're configured correctly, or your BIOS may need to be updated to the latest version. When doing either of these things, be sure to follow your device manufacturer's instructions on how to do it carefully. Look up those specific instructions first. Some manufacturers like HP or Dell have posted detailed instructions online on how to check for these issues and/or correct them.

On my Thinkpad T470S with Ubuntu 20.04 -- Keyboard back-light is enabled out of the box. Pressing [Fn-Space] will toggle between keyboard back-light settings on this laptop. Maybe the manual for your keyboard will provide insight into the key combination that might work for its back-light?

This caused a problem when I started using i3wm. When the backlight was on, the metakey was non-functional. I could turn it on and off with scroll lock and use meta when it was off, but i3 needs that too much and it is too hard to see my keyboard without the light, so this was not an ideal way to do it. The above solution, xset led on is a much better solution. By leaving the keymap alone, I can use meta anytime I need it and always see the keyboard.

I just bought an EagleTec mechanical keyboard with blue backlight, and like J. Chomel, found that I just needed to use a key combination to turn the backlight on or off, enable/disable "breathing" mode, or adjust the brightness.In my case, I'm using it on LinuxMint 17, but it should work on other distributions also.

I do want to point out that I am liking ubuntu mate so far, but it is annoying that ubuntu always resets my keyboard light to 50%. This is annoying since I am using a laptop, as it uselessly drains power.

Guys I know that, but I have to keep turning it down every time I do so. I am not saying it is permenent.

The ubuntu mate team needs to fix this.

The solution that would be highly recommended for me is the one that works in Mint which is that the ambient light sensor is used to tell the back-light what level to be at (known to work on Thinkpad and Dell). But I know that is wishful thinking on my part.

I have a Dell XPS 13 9343. Make sure you are changing the correct option. There are two different things that say KbdBacklight. I had to scroll to see the second option. I accidentally changed the first option when I did it the first time.

So I plugged the mouse in and it worked fine. But the keyboard had 0 light poping up on it yet it worked fine. After some mixed interactions with (I even claimed a RMA thinking it was defective), my girlfriend simply plugged it into a windoze 10 machine and THE LIGHTS WENT ON! Plugging it back however into a Linux host brought the same initial result: keyboard worked but not the lights.

The easiest way to determine whether your computer is equipped with a backlit keyboard is to look at the F10, F6, or right arrow key (located in the lower right corner). If none of these keys have the illumination icon printed on it, your computer does not have a backlit keyboard.

Select your computer model from the Table of Contents and follow the instructions for updating the BIOS and changing the settings on the keyboard backlight. Your backlit keyboard may have options other than off (disabled), dim, or bright.

After installing Win 10, my Samsung Series 7 backlit keyboard won't light up. Fn+F2/F3 won't work and neither will Fn+F1 for Samsung settings. I tried installing the Samsung software controlling this Easy Settings but it isn't supported in Win 10. No drivers available from Samsung, either. Is there a way to light it up?

Unfortunately, the backlit settings could only be used through easy settings, a Samsung application which isn't compatible with Windows 10, so it means no, Windows 10 renders the backlit keyboard useless and there's no way around it unless you downgrade back to Windows 7 and install easy settings.

I succeded with this advice - it seems that Windows 10 recognize Samsung's built-in keyboard as Lenovo keybaord and then the backlighting starts working only sometimes. Reinstalling it as generic keyboard should fix the problem.

Yes, it writes the file. You can see the maximum brightness in /sys/class/leds/asus::kbd_backlight/max_brightness, you should be able to write values between 0 and the maximum into /sys/class/leds/asus::kbd_backlight/brightness, and that should, in theory, change the brightness of the keyboard.
