What Does Kew Beach School Council Do?
We are made up of parents and caregivers like you!
We are an advisory body that makes recommendations to the Principal or to the School Board on matters such as strategies to improve school performance, selection criteria for principals, and board policies that affect the school.
We consult with parents/guardians about matters under consideration by our School Council.
We develop and work within bylaws that govern election processes, fill vacancies, and deal with conflict resolution.
We keep minutes of meetings, set an annual budget to supplement and support students, and maintain financial records.
We focus on improved learning for all students.
We maintain a school-wide perspective on all issues.
We represent and communicate the views of our school community.
We organize social events to facilitate engagement amongst Kew families e.g. speakers, Parent Social, Family Skate Night, Beachfest, etc.
We volunteer.
6 Reasons to Volunteer at Kew Beach Public School
Kids whose parents/guardians volunteer at school do better in school.
No surprise there. Studies show that children whose parents are involved in their education tend to do well in school. It’s not that the actual work we do makes them thrive; it’s that parents who are involved in activities like School Council tend to have a stronger commitment to education.
Volunteering sends a message to your child/children that school is important.
Volunteering tells your kids: I care about your school. I care about you being at a school that is the best it can be. And I care so much that I am volunteering my time at your school.
Volunteering sends a message to your school that your child’s education is important.
There is no better way to tell your children‘s teachers and administrators that you want your kids to get the best education possible then by getting involved at their school.
Volunteering helps give a little extra in a time of budget cuts.
Shrinking budgets are forcing schools to do more with less at a time when our kids need to learn more than ever. Volunteering is a way to enrich your children’s school at no cost. The School Council can also raise funds for extras that the TDSB does not cover such as extra sports equipment, special in-school events, or supplementing school trips for kids in need.
Volunteering feels good.
Giving to your community is an important thing to do. Most parents start volunteering because of their kids, but soon find that helping their community feels good.
Volunteering is a GREAT way to learn new skills.
Many parent volunteers find they pick up skills that make them better at their jobs and improve their parenting too! For example, volunteering can provide the chance to practice and become a better communicator or organizer.
We always have volunteer opportunities for interested parents/caregivers! Whether you want to spend an hour delivering pizza to classrooms or you want to lead an event, there is a fit for you. To discuss what option might be the best for your time availability and interests, please contact us at kewschoolcouncil@gmail.com.
