Wood

• Wood is necessary to fix the solar panels and the watertight box with all the electronics together. 

• There are many fence material options available, but some of the most common wood species used for fencing are Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, Pressure-Treated Wood and Redwood. Cedar contains natural oils which are a deterrent to insect. Douglas Fir performs superbly when used outdoors even without treatment. Pressure-treated wood is a strong and durable material because chemicals are added. Redwood a good choice for fences because of its natural resistance to rot and decay. We can use cedar, douglas fir, and redwood.

What is pressure treated lumber? Are is that type of wood useful for this project? Is it bad?

• Pressure-treated lumber is the result of a process that uses high pressure to inject a preservative into the wood. Although it makes the wood last longer, it is not eco-friendly due to the chemicals inside the wood: chromium, copper, and arsenic. Therefore, pressure-treated wood is not ideal for this project since our goal is to be as eco-friendly as possible.

• We used cedar for our project because it is affordable and eco-friendly at the same time.
