Putting the "Fun" Back in Fundamentals
Using First Steps in Music to Develop Foundational Skills Through Play, Themes, and Creativity
Saturday, May 16, 2026
Berkman Recital Hall - HARTT School of Music
9am-12pm
This session will explore how music teachers can “put the fun back in fundamentals” by intentionally teaching foundational music skills through joyful, engaging, and developmentally appropriate experiences. Using the framework of First Steps in Music: Developing Foundational Skills for Young Learners, Connie will demonstrate how to build tuneful, beatful, and artful musicians through singing, movement, listening, and play. Through three spring themes, participants will discover creative, experiential lesson ideas that spark imagination while still supporting important musical goals. Teachers will leave with practical strategies, song ideas, and activities they can immediately use to excite and engage young musicians while strengthening foundational skills.
