When I say that I love media and broadcast journalism most people think I am exaggerating or playing around with them, but it is the truth, it’s given me so many memories and opportunities. So this is my story about how I fell in love with media. Six grade I was at an open house for my new middle school and I was interested in the science magnet there and had gone to see what it was about. And then one of my good friend’s moms asked if I wanted to go see the media magnet and I agreed, I watched a music video and from that moment on I was hooked. I thought it was so incredible that students a couple of years older than me were able to produce something like that and I wanted to do it so I changed my magnet to media. A few months passed and I’m standing outside my media classroom in the morning when the eighth grade media teacher walked over to my class and asked if any one of us wanted to participate in the school's morning announcements. I volunteered and that day I ended up anchoring in front of the whole school. I really remember like it was yesterday, I was so nervous and excited and when it was over, I knew that that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and so from that day forward I shadowed and participated in the morning as much as I could. In eighth grade, I became the floor manager and showed up every day at 8:15 am to lead my school's morning announcements. Everyone had thought I was crazy to go every day but I loved it. I helped my teams set up the cameras, worked the tricaster, set up the teleprompters, everything. I was the boss, the leader, and it felt amazing to be able to do that every day and produce quality morning announcements.
In high school I was recommended to skip the intro media classes so I was put into the advanced class and got to work on day one working as a photog in a reporter group for my schools weekly news magazine show Called CSN, Centennial Student News. Through the years, I worked my way through the ranks, became a reporter, and junior year became a producer. I have created many news stories and been in the field of journalism Every day my favorite class to walk into has been media. I’ve put so much of my time and energy into my show to make it the best it can be from reporting during COVID to now mentoring my reporters. It has been a surreal experience to be able to create one of the most respected high school news shows in the city and to be able to create a family and future legacies to be able to keep this amazing show going for when I’m gone. It gives me such a thrill every day to be able to participate in something that I love to do in and out of school. My media journey started out from music videos and PSA’s and now ended up with a weekly news broadcast that I edit and oversee. I really cannot express the gratitude that I have for these experiences, the opportunities to travel to state and national conventions to compete, to become a leader in a role model to my younger classmates, to have bonded and made so many new friends and relationships that I will now be forever grateful for. For seven years this has been my entire life, my love and my passion. Winning awards and being a state champion for three years in a row has been a plus as well.
When people would ask me what I wanted to do in the future, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Thanks to media and broadcast journalism, now I have the opportunity to make that a reality by attending the University of Oklahoma, Gaylord College for broadcast journalism and communications, that I have recently been accepted into. I am so incredibly excited for what my future holds. Again, I know all of this might sound exaggerated, but I promise you that it’s not. I have put my heart and soul into every single one of my projects and 110% effort into everything I do. I have not only inspired others to do the same as well, but it has inspired me to keep this passion alive inside me, and to keep pushing for my dream to become a producer for my career.
I am currently a Co-Producer for my school's weekly news show called Centennial Student News and have been for 2 years. CSN is a student written, edited and produced news show that serves the students of Centennial High School and community of Las Cruces, NM. We are a nationally recognized organizaton with 5x NMAA state championships. My job is to not only report but to produce and mentor my CSN members and crew by teaching key elements of broadcast journalism in intensive crituiqe sessions run by me and my fellow co-producer Isaac Nuñez.
I believe there can be a lot of exciting and heartfelt stories told through photojournalism and my favorite moments to capture were my hometown's football games.

Reporting and writing are fundamental elements we use in Cen10Media and I have been writing news stories and reporting since my 9th grade year where I placed 1st in my state competition. Since then I have strengthened my skills and even taught others how to as well. It is a very important component of our broadcast journalism show, so we have to make sure that each of our reporters know how to not only write journalism packages but report them effectively aswell. Even while facing the hardships of reporting during COVID, I still made the best quality news stories utilizing the tools I could. (i.e. Zoom)

In CSN we ensure that each news package and segment is produced to the best journalsitic standards. We begin the production process by brainstorming various issues and topics in our community. Students then go out to film and interview relevant subjects to support their story idea. Our program utilizes editing software tools such as Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro to edit and finalize segments. As a producer, I work with our reporters to ensure accurate, non biased, factual and educational news stories and segments.
Being a CSN Co-Producer for 2 years, I have had the opportunity to not only be a leader and role model, but to teach and give my mentorship to other team members. I strive to be the leader to motivate and promote innovation within my team so that they can produce the best quality content. Communicating with others, seeking out critiques from my team members, and staying organized has been key to leading my peers to achieve our highest goals. I have also had the chance to be President of my school's SkillsUSA chapter that Cen10Media is involved in. Being voted into this position gave the the confidence to pursue greatness for the 2022-23 school year. Therefore, even as a new chapter in our school we have done multiple community service activities and fundraisers. I have made it my priority to be the best President I can be; by hosting multiple monthly chapter and officer meetings, learning about Robert's Rules of Order, and focusing on gathering new members for our chapter to expand in our school.
Although being leader, I wouldn't be able to do what I do without the help and support of my team. Where everyone has a crucial role and is important to any Cen10Media production. It can be difficult to steer through everyone's diffrent personalities, schedules and needs, but everyone is just as committed to CSN as I am and that helps keeps me motivated to lead my team at the end of the day. CSN has created a family dynamic amoungst my class mates and has helped unlikley friendships blossom. We hang out with each other, checking up on one another, and hold each other to a higher standard in and out of the CSN studio.

Our Instagram has the biggest outreach into the community with daily posts; from print journalism packages to fun team bonding pictures, @cen10media_ instagram in my personal favorite to be apart of. It's most convientent platfrom to reach out to our campus community to get imput and feedback. Engaging with students and staff using polls, reels and countdowns; for example we use the countdown timers to let the viewers now when our shows will be released, when events are hppening on campus and when we are having important events such as our STN crazy 8 practice days or even the STN convention!
In the beginning of 2022, we stuggled with posting quality content consistently. I then made it one of my priorities of 2022-23 school year to improve our instagram presence and posts. After going over our standards of consistency and professionalism with the team, we now post regularly on all our multimedia platforms. Promoting our student news show CSN from our social media to get more views was one main goals. Posting on instagram has made more engagement especially with our students even asking to be featured in our shows.
We also have a student run TikTok acount that posts fun and creative videos for our student body to enjoy!
In Centennial Student News we use Adobe editing softwares such as; Premiere Pro, After Efects and Lightroom to construct mutimedia jouralism reporting packages.
In addition to using adobe softwares we have newly started using Apple's Final Cut Pro to edit our new shows.
CSN has a steady audience engagement of viewers everytime we post. With most our viewers being our own student body from ages 13-17 most being female. We reach a number of accounts due to our promotions and trendy posts on instagram, where we have our most engagment with our viewers. I have the opportunity to be an account manager on instagram and boost our content by posting more often.
Our goal at Cen10Media is to serve the community, to provide professional "student news you can trust" as it states in our show intro. While being student run through all social media platforms, we hold all members and crew to practice and enforce journalism ethics and law.
In our program, students explore the importance of journalistic law and ethical practices by engaging in real life situations while reporting. With a highly respected student news program, I always ensure that what we produce is to the quality and standards of professional cuurent media literacy.
CSN insures everyone equal opportunities to participate in our shows, we are comminted to showcasing our diverse campus to the student body of Centennial. From students that live one minute away from schoool to exchange students from across the world, From football players to band students, we include everyone. We also have made a community video showcasing our school spirit and campus. Hawk Yeah!
Cen10Media is active in our community and guarantees to give back to the future students of the world. We have recently been involed in many community service acts such as hosting a Trunk or Treat for our SkillsUSA chapter. I had the privilege and pleausre of organizing the event, I got other clubs and organizations to contribute to the event, acquired a food truck and put together a haunted house for kids. We often partner with local elementary school Columbia Elementary. We also visited Monta Vista Elementary to see their school's live morning annoucements. We reach out to elementary school students to plant the journalism seed in their mind at a early age in hopes of them considering broadcast journalism as their career.
I'm so excited to have the opputunity to further my Media and Journalism education at the University of Oklahoma, Gaylord College of Mass Media Communications and Journalism.
