Welcoming Remarks

It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 2024 KER International Conference, held in the picturesque Alpensia Convention Center in Pyeongchang. Since the foundation of the Korean Economic Association in 1952, we have been at the forefront of advancing economic research and fostering global scholarly exchanges. This year, we proudly continue this tradition by exploring a timely and critical theme: “Global Economic Shifts and Data-Driven Perspectives.”

The global economy is rapidly changing, reshaped by new geopolitical challenges and ongoing conflicts. Recent events, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the ongoing tensions in Israel, have not only destabilized regional economies but also sent ripples across the global financial and commodity markets, disturbing energy security, supply chains, and international trade relations. These developments underscore the rising importance of economic security, as nations increasingly prioritize the stability and resilience of their economic infrastructures in the face of geopolitical risks.

Our conference aims to address these transformations through a comprehensive dialogue underpinned by the latest data-driven research. Our objective is to share insights across various domains of economics that respond to and predict changes in the global economic environment. From microeconomic design to macroeconomic policy, our discussions will engage with the strategic insights and policy innovations necessary for adapting to the dynamic characteristics of the global economy.

I would like to draw your attention to one special attempt for this year’s conference. We are pleased to offer dedicated child care services during the conference. This initiative, a first of its kind for us, is especially pertinent given Korea's serious low birth rate. It reflects our commitment to fostering a family-friendly work environment.

We extend our gratitude to all co-hosts and contributors, including the Korea-America Economic Association, whose ongoing support enhances our collective endeavor to advance economic science. Special thanks go to our organizing committee co-chairs, Professors Jungmin Lee and Yoonsoo Lee, the scientific committee, and Professor Seijin Min, Executive Secretary of the Korean Economic Association, whose dedication and hard work have been instrumental in making this event happen.

As we engage over the two days of intensive discussions and networking, we hope not only to contribute to the understanding of global economic shifts but also to foster sustainable and innovative policy solutions that will shape the economic landscape for years to come.

Thank you for your participation, and I wish you a productive and enlightening conference experience.

Warm regards,

Hongkee Kim

President, The Korean Economic Association
