The TK-481 Version 2 radios are programmed for the amateur band by using KPG-49D which is Kenwood programming software (i.e. copyrighted software, not freeware). The Version 1 TK-481 handheld is programmed using KPG-35D, you cannot use KPG-49D to program them. If you don't know what version TK-481 you have then please see the "TK-481 General Info" section of this website.

One thing before we begin is this: you CANNOT hurt the radio with bad programming or loose any features in the radio by writing some corrupted file to the radio- this just doesn't happen with Kenwood!

If you ignore the licensing issues - just ask yourself a question. Who do you want to talk to? What I mean is that becoming a ham - doing the study and taking an exam means your desire is to talk to strangers local strangers who might become friends, or distant strangers who once the contact is made, you probably never speak to again. The fun is the quest for communications and for many, collecting callsigns. Other hams like experimenting. They might like building radios, or antennas, and their hobby is gradual improvement. If you only want to talk to the same people, and that is your requirement, ham radio will drive you mad. Repeaters - simply create a cell - a small one in a city, or a large one in rural areas when the repeater can sit on a tall point, geography wise. Anyone in the cell area can talk to anyone else, within limits - so a few miles up to 30 miles could be possible. Rick mentioned the US GMRS system which seems to mean (thanks Rick) that repeater access could be open to anyone, and I expect the internet provides the programming info. Equally I expect others will limit access to people they want to use it. Anyone can with investigation find the access info for analogue repeaters, but the users are under no compulsion to talk to you.

Whilst Radiotronics can provide the tools you need to program and configure your radios, we will not help you program them. Furthermore, we will not offer technical support for installing software, COM port issues, cable issues, driver issues, programming or updating the firmware of your two way radio(s).

Hello everyone. Around 5 years ago a friend who worked for comcast gave me an old Kenwood TK-880 radio. The company bought out some old AT&T vans, and ripped out the radios and were throwing them away, so he saved one for me. I've never done anything with it, fast forward to today and i decided to break it out and have some fun. We ordered a programming cable for kenwoods a few days ago, and just got it in, im worried that i was sent the wrong one, because its not an ethernet type connector, (big fat one) its like the old school telephone connectors, (tiny one). it still clicks in, and when i use the programming software "KPG-60D" and try to read or write to the radio, the screen flashes and shows "PROGRAM."

so it seems like the cable is working, although its only a 6 pin, and inside the kenwood is definitely an 8 pin, my thoughts are that those might just be the transmit and receive pins and dont matter when it comes to programming. be457b7860
