This classic home, located in Kent's Historic West Neighborhood, was the former residence of the Patton Family.
W. W. Patton and his wife, Harriet, built the home in 1902. Patton held many prominent positions within the city of Kent including Postmaster and Superintendent of Kent Schools. His daughter, Emma, studied music at both the Boston School of Music and the Oberlin Conservatory and then returned to Kent to teach piano.
After Emma’s death in 1939, the house was entrusted to Coterie.
Coterie, meaning "circle of friends," is a ladies' organization founded in 1896 by Emma Patton. Coterie was chosen to maintain the property and provide space for community groups to gather.
In its early years, many recognizable women of Kent were active participants of Coterie. Their family surnames include; Longcoy, Parsons, Wolcott, Kent, Elgin, Smith and Spelman.
The home continues in the care of the 125 members that make up the five current Kent Coteries who strive to maintain this historic dwelling through private donation and property rental.
