About us

Caving with the University of Kent

Caving with UKC is a unique opportunity to explore many areas of the UK that not many people get a chance to see. We run regular trips fortnightly to beautiful areas of the British countryside. This is slightly different at the moment as we are adjusting to the Covid-19 pandemic but we are hoping to get trips going again soon when it is safe to do so. We visit national parks such as the Brecon Beacons in South Wales, the Mendip Hills in Somerset and the Dales in Yorkshire.

What do you get out of it?

Alongside exploration, members have the opportunity to develop several key transferable skills such as leadership, group management, health & safety awareness, first aid and teamwork as well as several technical skills such as rope work, rigging, single rope technique (SRT) and navigation. Not to mention the amount of confidence you build and a chance to increase your fitness.

Caving is an exhilarating experience and often becomes a significant part of our members’ university life. We are a close knit, friendly and approachable group with regular socials. We are also actively involved with various nationwide caving organisations. We often meet student cavers from other Universities on our travels, a good opportunity for some networking.

We provide all the technical equipment every new member will need for a trip, simply bring a sleeping bag, toiletries and some warm fast-drying clothes and our experienced leaders will guide you through some of the UK’s most impressive cave systems. You yourself could become one of our leaders!

Afraid of Heights? Scared of the Dark? Claustrophobic?

It is natural to be apprehensive, and most of us were nervous before we went into our caves. Come along to one of our training sessions or speak to a member of our committee. Our trained leaders will pick caves to suit your needs and help you build up your confidence. It doesn't matter if you are fit and active or you don't typically engage in sport, everything will be done to your pace. Members will always be given the opportunity to stick to their comfort zone or face their fears. You will be surprised to find you're more capable than you know!
