The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law that mandates the privacy of educational records. The law guarantees specific rights to students and sets restrictions on how schools handle educational records. FERPA requires schools secure written permission from students before releasing educational records.
As a Task Supervisor or Practicum Instructor, you are required to maintain the educational confidentiality of the student you are supervising. Please secure hard copies of any documentation regarding students, and never provide anyone else access to SONIA.
All agency Task Supervisors, On- or Off-Site Practicum Instructors sign and date a SONIA Site Confidentiality Statement document before being given SONIA access. If you have not, please promptly contact the Practicum Education Coordinator you were working with or email the Practicum Office.
