Regular attendance in class is expected of all students at all levels at the university. While classes are conducted on the premise that regular attendance is expected, the university recognizes certain activities, events and circumstances as legitimate reasons for absence from class. This policy provides for accommodations in accordance with federal and state laws prohibiting discrimination, including, but not limited to, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, 29 U.S.C.794, and its implementing regulation, 34 C.F.R. Students will be awarded summer financial aid based on a Cost of Attendance budget that equates to approximately three months of living expenses plus summer term tuition charges. If your child will be going home with a friend or having a friend come home with them, the online form must be submitted by the families involved or a note must be brought to school by each child saying the parents agree. Both children should bring notes and send them to the office in the attendance envelopes. A permission slip will then be issued to allow a child to ride a different bus home, or, in the case of walkers, to allow the child to walk home on a different route. Across Kent County in western Michigan, a network of nonprofits, educators, and state and county agencies has demonstrated that a collaborative, community schools approach can reduce chronic absence. Some of the 30 schools in the Kent School Services Network (KSSN) have cut absenteeism rates in half and seen academic achievement improve along with attendance. A decision to post county DHS case workers at each community school boosted student attendance by a full week.

Weekly attendance meetings are held at each of the KSSN schools, providing an opportunity for the principal, attendance secretary, community school coordinator, and DHS staff member to monitor attendance data and review all absences from the prior week. In Wyoming Public Schools, Parkview Elementary School reduced its chronic absence rate from 10 to 7 percent in the past three years, while the number of students with satisfactory attendance climbed from 54 to 71 percent.

Unexcused Absences

Any absences not excused shall be considered unexcused. Seven unexcused absences within a school year constitute a student being truant for the purpose of filing a petition with the Jefferson County Juvenile Court Early Warning System. School administrators are required under state law to enforce compulsory school attendance laws (Compulsory School Attendance Law of the State of Alabama, 16-28-3; Act: 2009-564 Ala. Code, 1975).

Administrators and teachers will make every effort to promote regular attendance by students and solicit assistance from parents/guardians in accomplishing this objective. Students involved in school related activities sanctioned by school administrators are counted as attending. To participate in extracurricular activities after school, students must have been in attendance at school that day.

This protocol will be enforced for all men's and women's basketball games, gymnastics, volleyball and wrestling home events. Only student-athletes, staff and designated event personnel may be present. There will be no admittance for fans, friends or family. The Kent State band, cheer and dance programs will also not be in attendance.

We would like to bring to your notice that, under the Education Act 1996; it is the duty of parent(s)/responsible adult(s) to ensure the regular attendance of their child in school. This means that they must be in attendance, and on time, every time the school is open, unless they are prevented from doing so by reason of illness or any unavoidable cause. If parents take their children on holiday in term time and leave of absence has not been granted, the Local Education Authority may issue a Penalty Notice under Section 444(1) of the Education Act 1996. The Penalty Notice imposes a fine of up to 120 per parent per child.

If a student has 90% attendance in Year 7, they will have missed 4 weeks of teaching and learning. If the same student repeats this all the way to the end of Year 11, they will have missed the equivalent of half a year in terms of missed learning time. If the figure was 80% over the course of time between Years 7 and 11 then the student will have missed an entire year of learning. This will have a huge impact on progress and attainment and consequently their options at post-16 will be severely limited.
