Unbeknownst to Kenny, his position was contingent upon the company's contract with the Navy, which was not disclosed at the time of his employment. Just days into the new year, the entire crew was laid off with only one day's notice, unless they accepted a position at a different location. Kenny secured employment at Big 5 Sporting Goods due to its convenient location near his residence, which allowed for a minimal commute and more time for school and family priorities. However, he soon discovered that the job's demands and limited wage opportunities conflicted with his needs. Seeking better opportunities, Kenny took on a part-time position at a new flooring company, which quickly evolved into a full-time crew lead role. This new opportunity enabled him to leave his employment at Big 5 behind.

During his tenure at Fowler Flooring, Kenny also gained valuable experience in customer service, interpersonal communication, and management.
