In fall of 2013, after thinking about how lucky we were to have access to amazing art experiences, we launched KEM Creative Studios, a program in which we teach art classes to children in the homeless community. Each of our lessons integrates advanced techniques, professional-quality art supplies, and an opportunity for expression and self-reflection. We have developed curricula involving perspective; proportions; tints and shades; primary, secondary, tertiary, and complementary colors; and a number of other art skills. Every class is tailored to provide students with the opportunity to integrate their personal experiences and emotions into their work.
Throughout the past four years, KEM Creative Studios has introduced professional grade media and complex art techniques to more than 490 students across Los Angeles and Guatemala. We recruited and trained fifteen Art Ambassadors; we managed forty volunteers during our summer camp; and we painted a mural at Alexandria House. We've received funding, leadership training, and other resources from Dragon Kim Foundation, the Karma for Cara Foundation, AFS: Project Change, and individual donors.
We hope in the upcoming year, Ambassadors will continue to assist in class and develop their own lessons, supporting program growth in multiple locations. We intend to double the number of shelter partnerships and Art Ambassador staff, as well as host multiple summer camps at the various shelters.
Thank you for visiting our website and for supporting KEM Creative Studios!
