• Singgar Tulo Dance

Singgar Tulo Dance is one of the traditional dances originating from Central Sulawesi, specifically from the culture of the Kaili people, one of the largest ethnic groups in the province. This dance holds deep historical and philosophical values, as it functions not only as entertainment but also as a symbol of strength, unity, and the cultural identity of the Kaili community.

The name "Singgar Tulo" consists of two words in the Kaili language: "Singgar", meaning pole or support, and "Tulo", meaning three. Literally, Singgar Tulo means "three supporting pillars", which represent the three main forces in community life: family, unity, and cooperation. These three elements are believed to be the fundamental pillars that maintain social harmony and strengthen the community’s resilience in facing both internal and external challenges.

This dance is typically performed by a group of male and female dancers wearing traditional Kaili costumes. The costumes are usually bright and colorful with distinctive ethnic patterns, complemented by accessories such as headbands, traditional sarongs, and props like spears, shields, or farming tools, depending on the theme of the performance. The accompanying music uses traditional instruments such as drums, gongs, lalove (a bamboo flute), and other percussion instruments that create a lively and powerful rhythm.

The movements in the Singgar Tulo Dance are quite dynamic, combining elements of strength, coordination, and grace. Every movement of the hands, feet, and body positions carries its own meaning. For example, the motion of spinning the spear symbolizes the community’s readiness to defend their ancestral land, while circular movements reflect unity and harmony among different community groups.

In addition to being performed at traditional events such as welcoming ceremonies for honorable guests, regional celebrations, or harvest festivals, this dance is also frequently showcased in national and international cultural performances. This reflects that Singgar Tulo Dance is not only a local cultural heritage but also a national treasure worth celebrating.
