Audience: Personification of the categories you'll be assessed for
not having a strong enough controlling idea to allow for 2/3rds of your essay to be discussion
giving a plot summary rather than integrating specific, supporting evidence (you must use exact moments from the text)
presenting but not explaining your evidence (PEEL your paragraphs and ICE your quotes)
writing on more than one character (best to stick to one and explore in great detail)
skip introductory and/or concluding paragraphs
writing too little (aim for 3-4 body paragraphs with 6-12 sentences each)
using "I" or contractions such as "don't" or "shouldn't"
writing with "banned words" ("thing", "good", "show")
not proofreading to check for errors with incomplete sentences, capitalization of authors and characters, skipping or overusing commas, etc.
