I am currently a costume designer for my high school's Actors Reperatory show Ride The Cyclone. This is my first time designing costumes and is a design area that I am not completely familiar with. Thankfully, this production does not have huge and insane costume changes. There are 7 main costumes and the rest of the changes are small costume changes such as skirts, vests, or ties. I do not have the completed looks for any character as we have a couple months before we perform but I do have drawings and photos of the costumes.
I started by drawing up each character's main costume. I first drew them on paper (in a spur of the moment idea) and then drew them more officially on my Ipad. I also created a costume change plot and looked through our costume bin and shelf to see what we had. I took photos and started picking things out and placed them in my designated area in our costume shop so that I could have actors start trying on their base outfits. I am also the stage manager so during performances I will be in the tech booth but I plan to put racks backstage and hang up the characters costume pieces so that they can easily find them. I will also provide a costume crew to ensure that changes get done in a timely manner.
