The star compass is a navigation tool used by ancient Polynesian sailing canoes to determine their position by the rising and setting various objects in the heavens.
This version of the star compass was initially created by the Polynesian Voyaging Society's Nainoa Thompson based on the Micronesian Star Compass of Mau Piailug. More information is available in the Polynesian Voyaging Society Archives.
We have created images of several star compass configurations that may be downloaded from this web page, but may not be sold for profit. The star compass image may be printed onto different media (paper, posters, vinyl, etc.) in various sizes. So far, we're printed compasses up to 20.25 square feet (4.5 feet x 4.5 feet).
