India’s rivers are undergoing a drastic change due to pressures of population and development. The perennial rivers in every state are becoming seasonal or going totally dry. In Kerala — the Bharathappuzha, in Karnataka — the Kabini, in Tamil Nadu — the Kaveri, Palar and Vaigai, in Odisha — the Musal, in Madhya Pradesh — the Kshipra. Many smaller rivers have already vanished.
The rivers that have nurtured and nourished us for thousands of years — Ganga, Krishna, Narmada, Kaveri — are depleting fast. Today our 65% of water needs are met by rivers, but we may have only 50% of the water that is required for our survival by the year 2030. That is to say, our country's lifelines are dying.
The smell of the land, the chatter of the birds, the sounds of the people, and a lot of conversations that would otherwise go unheard are said to be carried by the lissom waves of a river. It is based on an original Kannada poem, and presents an ensemble blending Kathak and Bharatanatyam, Contemporary dance moves with acting, and Carnatic music with the Hindusthani.
