KC Washington, MA. Ed, is a Foreign Language Lecturer and Writing Instructor. Her research and writing areas of interest are TESOL, Educational Motivation, Literacy Education, and Student-Centered Learning.
An educator’s job is to be prepared, well and broadly read, engaged, flexible, and sensitive to the needs of our students. However, we are not wholly or even ultimately responsible for a student’s motivation or learning. Educators should provide a strong, safe foundation enabling students to take ownership of their education, develop and nurture their motivations and interests, push past their socio-affective filters, and grow emotionally and intellectually.

Building Student Relationships for a More Fulfilling Career

ABSTRACT
This paper plays on the theme of Embracing Humanity in the Age of AI by exploring the motivations that lead to connection and to learning. The foundation of education is connection, however, in the age of AI, connecting with students is increasingly difficult. The lure of role-playing games (RPGs), the instant gratification of ChatGPT, and other modern conveniences are hard to compete with. My paper showcases how real-world activities outside of the classroom, informed by student interests and input, can spark engagement and increase learning. It also explores how designing lesson plans which broaden the scope of the textbook to engage with students outside of the classroom, may enhance an educator’s professional and private life. According to the American Psychological Association, “Improving students' relationships with teachers has important, positive and long-lasting implications for both students' academic and social development” (Rimm-Kaufman & Sandilos, 2025, para 1).
Mehdi Hasan is renowned, nee infamous, for his insightful, well-researched, often brutal interviews of everyone from linguist Noam Chomsky to comedian activist Jon Stewart. Enjoying a wide-ranging career, which includes host of The Intercept-produced podcast Deconstructed and currently host of MSNBC-Peacock The Mehdi Hasan Show, Hasan has released a new book on, as the title proclaims, how to win every argument. Although ostensibly about how honing your debate skills can improve communication, it can also serve as a novel teaching resource providing guideposts to build speaking confidence and encourage a love of learning and resilience in the face of failure or setbacks.
ChatGPT and the Honor System
Just like writing with a pen and paper or in cursive, the honor system is an old fashioned, outdated method. Rare are the instances of leave a penny, take a penny, although it must be said, here in Korea, the system of self-service in restaurants and the waiter counting the bottles of soju, beer, and cider on the table at the end of the meal versus keeping a running tab, is a welcome throwback. That said, although pen and paper and cursive writing still serve a purpose, what should we make of the honor system with the advent of ChatGPT, especially in the age of auto correct and Grammarly?
Some might say writing about student motivation and its source is an old chestnut, but I would argue it’s an evergreen. Every crop of students is different; every generation has its shiny attention thieves and distractions. My generation had Ms. Packman, Must-See TV, and scavenger hunts. Today’s generation has Roblox game programs on YouTube, zombie K-dramas, and Minecraft game programs on YouTube. Every crop of students varies, and every crop of teachers – freshmen and veterans alike–must assess new personalities and interests before posing the eternal question: What motivates students and who’s responsible for providing said motivation?
